Volume 1 opens the collection with a story of finding love after heartbreak in "Be Careful with My Heart." Casey and Hunter are thrown together in a traveling singing group during the summer; can they overcome their own personal losses and together find God's comfort for their hearts?
The charming vignette, "The Haircut," follows next as the future of young Bobby's hair is altered during a summer camping trip.
FROM THE PUBLISHER: Lori Wick is known as one of the most versatile Christian fiction writers on the market today. From pioneer fiction to a series set in Victorian England to a contemporary novel, Lori's books (over 5 million in print) continue to delight readers and top the Christian bestselling fiction list. Lori and her husband, Bob, live in Wisconsin with "the three coolest kids in the world."
This author and her books were apparently the staple of approved Christian media for some of my friends who grew up in the church. They were reminiscing about her works over dinner the other night and I had to find out what I missed out on. The plots and characters sounded too contrived to have actually been published. Thankfully, they were published. Even better, they were readily (and cheaply) available on Kindle!
That being said, there are really two different ratings this book deserves: one rating belongs to reading it silently by yourself, the other is what happens when you read it out loud with others.
If read silently to yourself, this book is a solid 2 stars.... The characters act in completely unrealistic, fantastical ways. There is no description for anything of consequence, everything seems to happen in sets of 2: 2 years go by, 2 hours for napping, 2 hours for bonfires, 2 hours for breakfast (oh and breakfast is from 8:30-10:30, but does our main character have any description about herself? Not yet). The plot is thin, even for a 35 page short story, and predictable at every turn. It gets that bonus second star rating from me just because it's got scenes at a summer camp and I'm partial to camp life (although the campers never make an actual appearance).
On the other hand, when read out loud over dinner with friends... this piece of "reads like high schooler Christian fan-fiction after a week of summer camp" is ripe for laughter. It's a thrilling page turner - will the main character discover her own self worth and confidence? Will she discover it on her own, or only because the other conveniently single character says so? Who will win the staff hunt? Why is a lean-to an okay staff hunt hiding spot but a shed is not? What time will breakfast happen? How many times can the single love interest man creep up behind our main character and whisper something and it "not" be considered creepy? 5/5 stars for entertainment factor.
Never tried short stories. I still really like Lori Wick so it was good. First story made me want it to last longer. The second was VERY short. She included previews of other books of hers and an author she recommends. Certainly worth the time spent.
This book was such an enjoyable quick read. In it are two of Lori Wick's short stories and excerpts from her novel the Princess which has remained as one of my favorites of her books. This is well written and brought an evening of enjoyment to me.
