About the author

Leo Fritz Gruber was a German advertising executive and publicist and a pivotal figure in collecting and promoting photography in the 20th century. From 1950 to 1980 Gruber organized the photokina exhibitions, Cologne, where he showed work of August Sander (1951) and Erich Salomon (1956). In 1951, he became Trade Commissioner of the German Photo Industry and initiated the founding of the German Society of Photography. Gruber is perhaps best known for his friendship and professional association with Man Ray, whom he met in Paris in 1956. He formed an extensive collection of original works and documentary material on the life and work of Man Ray, and organized solo exhibitions of his work, and publications.
