“Dear Mr. Easter Bunny, I’ve been wondering how the Easter celebration started. Do you know? Well, I was curious, so I asked my teacher about it… I thought you would like to know too.” Discover how Easter started in It’s Not About You, Mr. Easter Bunny: A Love Letter About the True Meaning of Easter by Soraya Diase Coffelt with illustrations by Tea Seroya.

“It all began in ancient times,” when people worshipped all kinds of gods and goddesses. Eastre was the goddess for the spring season and fertility, and people worshiped her, believing that she brought new life. “Rabbits were a symbol of fertility because they have lots of babies quickly,” and were considered a special pet of the goddess. Of course, this is just one story. As time passes, and beliefs spread to new countries, the traditions and stories associated with Eastre change. Now we celebrate with baskets, candy, eggs, egg hunts, baby chicks, and the Easter Bunny.

The Christian celebration of Easter has nothing to do with the goddess Eastre, but everything to do with the one true God who sent His Son, Jesus, to save us from sin and death. So, at Easter, or really Resurrection Day, choose to remember and celebrate Jesus, and not Mr. Easter Bunny.

I enjoy The Love Letters Book Series, as they remind you to look to Jesus at every holiday. I like that they are set up as letters from a young child who just wants to enlighten holiday figures on why it’s not about them, but about Jesus always! They also don’t tell you not to celebrate or guilt you in any way for how you choose to partake of the holidays. Geared towards ages 6+, these stories are more like a history lesson, and contain only one theory, but they can make you think, and might even change how you celebrate. This one has definitely made me aware that the Easter Bunny is not as innocent a figure as he seems. The author also points out that Christians should always refer to the day as Resurrection Day… and I agree. Resurrection Day tells you what Easter is truly about, that He is Risen (Luke 24:6)!
