Set in a closely-knit industrial community at the beginning of the Second World War, Stan Barstow's long-awaited novel tells the story of young Ella Palmer and her family. Ella wants to marry, but her affections are torn. The circumstances in which Ella makes her final choice provide a poignant and fulfilling conclusion.
Just perfect. A bit too tense for 'comfort' and the easiness of the reading misleads as to how well this is written but so, so satisfying. I'm moving straight on to 'Give us this day'. [Not this edition - a paperback. cover apparently N/A]
