This is the sixth book in the Pet Rescue Club series.
Welcome to the Pet Rescue Club! The series begins when Janey starts a blog where people can share cute pet photos and stories. She never imagined she’d receive a heartbreaking photo of a skinny, abandoned dog. She calls on her friends Lolli, Zach, and Adam to help–and that’s just the start! When these animal-loving fourth graders discover how many animals need help in their suburban hometown, they can’t just sit by and do nothing…
In volume 6, the Pet Rescue Club is planning a fundraising event at the Third Street Shelter when they get an interesting call: a neighboring town needs help with the happiest dog around, Champion. The specialty firm helping Champion get his prosthetic legs is too far away for the shelter to manage. With fittings, trainings, and physical therapy, they just can’t make it work. But, of course, the Pet Rescue Club volunteers to help in anyway they can. Read along to find out how these fourth graders help out…and if Champion finds his forever home!

Brenda Scott Royce’s books, like her life, mix monkeys and mayhem. Her novels MONKEY LOVE (2006) and MONKEY STAR (2007) chronicle the misadventures of Holly Heckerling, a stand-up comedienne who befriends a monkey while juggling career and romantic entanglements. A former chimpanzee caregiver, Brenda is editor of the Los Angeles Zoo's award-winning magazine, ZOO VIEW. She has contributed to the Huffington Post and penned several episodes of the Disney Junior series, CHUGGINGTON. Brenda's children's books include two titles in the ASPCA's Pet Rescue Club series (CHAMPION'S NEW SHOES and BAILEY THE WONDER DOG) and nonfiction animal books for the Smithsonian Institution, Discovery, Animal Planet, and NatGeo Kids.
I loved this so much! Sure to bring a smile to the face of anyone who loves dogs, this tale of a very special pooch and the hard work that goes into finding the right home for deserving pets had me crying happy tears by the end. I cheered for the Pet Rescue Club when they had a success and worried along with them at every set back.
Along the way there are a number of gentle lessons about animal care and the rescue community. Peek behind the scenes of a well-run shelter, and meet some of the people who devote their lives to animal care. Learn about how even a hamster needs a lot of attention, and how much more rewarding it can be to adopt a pet when you have done enough research to bring out its true personality. And most of all, learn about how a small group of caring people can do great things. I have to admit that seeing these kids in action brought back fond memories of participating in fundraisers at that age, and how empowering that can be. And best of all, Royce makes sure that every character is distinct and recognizable, ensuring that this is no polemic but instead a rollicking read that will have you cheering for Champion by the end.
