This book is probably one of the best critique done by Malaysian on capitalism in the past history and era of Tanah Melayu and Malaysia. Aftermath of British colonization , this book by Wan Hashim delivers a good study on peasant in the feudal system and also how the people of Perak(the setting chosen) economize their agrarian society and what were the problems faced. Very well researched with huge amount of empirical data.
My conclusion after finishing the book is: Malaysia has not experienced a great social upheaval between the proletariat and bourgeoisie class because of the maintenance of the peasantry class through various government schemes and plans... Did you get that? Tough luck. I slough through almost 200 pages of this language. It was really weird because I have never studied Soviet economists, so their technical terms were a bit of a struggle for me. The writer is Malaysian and writing about agricultural development in Perak, pre and post-colonial times.
This book is more of a 3.5, actually because of how difficult it was for me to read. I opted to mark it 4-star, however, because there was a bunch of interesting information in the book.
