Bringing the facts, figures, and stories of the Presidents of the United States together, from Founding Father George Washington to Barack Obama, "The American Presidency For Beginners" explores the interesting and ever-evolving history of the Presidency and American history.
The President of the United States is an office that attracts men of all character and it has been held by farmers, scholars, veterans, lawyers from all different regions of the country. "The American Presidency For Beginners" tells a concise history of the actions and consequences of all 44 Presidents. The evolution of the Presidency is highlighted in ten different sections: from weak curator of Congress to becoming the titan of policy, both domestic and foreign.
"The American Presidency For Beginners" is a must read for those who find the position of commander-in-chief compelling and who want to learn more about the eclectic personalities that have led the US from its beginning to the present day.
As a student of American history, particularly early American history and having read perhaps a dozen books with George Washington as a focal character, I can appreciate the monumental task of condensing with relevant information all of our presidents in one volume. Politics has always been a rather nasty game, with the public often backing charismatic candidates or those with the most promises or less lies said about them rather than the actual best candidate. Perhaps surprisingly, we still have grown and prospered. This volume presents a rather unbiased summation of each president with their major accomplishments, failures and political issues. Less is said about some of the earlier presidents perhaps because less was known. My major criticism is the many gramatical and other mistakes. Ie James Buchanan served from 1857 -861. This was a giveaway and may have been an unproofed copy. Also we learned something about all the spouses except Obama who had one of the most popular first ladies in Michelle Obama.
There are much better books about the US presidents... if this author picked a theme and a baseline for the discussion of each president, and made the chapters equal- along with hiring a much needed editor this could be something special. The book ends up feeling like a child’s book, but at heart is nothing such as that. Some facts misreported, and names spelled wrong.
Enjoyable book on the US Presidents, even with the typos. Who knew that Harry Truman called for a creation of single-payer healthcare ? Read this book, politics is just a repeat of the same old, same old.
Great review of the presidents. Liked the highs and lows of each, pure fact and not political. Definitely changed my views of some of them. Will use this in my future teaching.
