This fascinating anthology about marriage today reveals the secrets in other people's lives, and the truths about our own. Examines relationships from varied angles--creating a magical fictional mirror that lets readers see inside strange houses and into familiar hearts.
I found the stories in Wives and Husbands mismatched and banal. I felt impatient during most of the writing that I managed to get through.
The book did, however, give me a good example of what makes good writing good. Put aside authors like Carver, Cheever and Updike the rest of these writers could simply not compete.
John Cheever’s The Fourth Alarm dazzled me. Carver’s What Is It? stunned me. Updike’s Separating moved me.
