Pumpkin People pb

Rate this book

A wonderful story of the pumpkin people from the illustrator of How Smudge Came. Constructed from cornstalks, straw and, of course, pumpkins, these folkloric figures appear all over town, sauntering down the sidewalk, sitting in a tree or cavorting on a lawn chair. By day they are art, but by night...that's a whole different story. Sandra and Ron Lightburn have imagined the life of a Pumpkin Person after all the children are put to bed, except, of course, two curious little kids and their cat.

Sandra Lightburn is a children's writer who lives in the Annapolis Valley. Her first book, Driftwood Cove, won the Sheila A. Egoff Children's Literature Prize for text and illustration.

Ron Lightburn's career as a children's book illustrator was launched with his Governor General's Award-winning artwork for Waiting for the Whales. Since then he has illustrated numerous other best-selling picturebooks.

I along with thousands of locals and tourists alike have made the trip to Kentville, Nova Scotia during their Fall Harvest Festival to visit, photograph, and admire the pumpkin people. Have you ever wondered what type of mischief the pumpkin people get up to at night when everyone is asleep? This beautifully detailed picture book shares their secret, known only to a few. Written in verse, I enjoyed being let in on their secret nighttime shenanigans, and on my next autumn pilgrimage, I will be looking at these famous fall residents with a new eye.
