There is a girl, a likable girl who loves to read and is a bit shy. Her family doesn't have much money. Early in the story, they are forced to move to another home--one that is sadly lacking and much smaller. The girl loves her father, but he's an alcoholic who can't overcome his addiction. Her mother is hard-working and trying her best to hold the family together. If you take all of the above and set it in New York--you have A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. If you set it in Georgia, you have Some Glad Morning. I love both books. The girls in both books are people I can identify with and empathize with. The stories aren't sugarcoated. Things don't turn out exactly as you'd hope--but both books end on positive notes. I found Some Glad Morning in the youth section of my library. I'm glad I did.
