Downside Risk is the story of Jason Conrad, a successful entrepreneur; his wife, Melissa, a conniving sycophant whom he blindly trusts; and an older woman, Bella Kaplan, his beloved mentor, surrogate mother, and the hypotenuse of a most unusual love/hate triangle. Risk examines the complex and deceitful interpersonal relationships between Jason and the two important women in his life, as well as their bitterly antagonistic struggles with each other.
Spanning the seven-year period from the founding of Jason’s company, JACorp, and his initial rise to wealth and power, through devastating losses that follow, this tale of personal and corporate intrigue captures the decadence of the nouveau riche set against the vivid backdrops of Los Angeles, Reno, Vegas, and Paris.
This is an easy reading storyline with a happy ending… It’s hilarious in some chapters and in other chapters you get the sense that Jason, a wealthy CEO of his own tech company, is a total dunce, easily manipulated by unscrupulous women…
I would have rated this one with 5 stars, but the author has a tendency to rely heavily on 4-letter profanity, which is totally unnecessary. (Surely, Linda Fields has a much broader vocabulary that can make her work more interesting and engaging for a larger audience.) Also, the name of this book, DOWNSIDE RISK, needs a better title… one that markets the story as intriguing. I was under the impression that it was all about Wall Street and manipulation of the stock market? It’s not what I was expecting, but it’s about relationship, trust, integrity and happiness.
