A superb account of life in a remote Saudi Arabian city from the eyes of a western woman, one of a handful living on the Saudi/Yemeni border that is all but unknown to people outside of the country.

The book takes course over a year and within that year, the author and her husband meet the mad, the bad and the dangerous to know - and that's amongst their fellow expats within the staff room! But the difference with this story is that the author isn't what could be termed a 'compound queen' who lived her life behind armed guards and barbed wired topped walls in Riyadh. She actually lived beside and interacted with ordinary Saudi Arabians and made many friends amongst them and her experiences are faithfully recorded in this book, as far as I know, the first book of its kind.

I don't think Demi Moore's 'G.I Jane' would have lasted a fortnight out there in Najran but of course, the author is made of sterner stuff, it will be a long time before a similar account by a western woman living in a city such as Najran will be written.

A superb story, all of it true and for that it is a massively deserved five stars... or cinque stelle.
