Scotland's 18th-century religious revival will ever be associated with Cambuslang, a parish near Glasgow, where in March 1742 'a spark of grace set the kingdom on a blaze'. First-hand accounts, which have long been unavailable and neglected, provide the main sources for this volume.
A well-researched account of the bizarre religious phenomena afflicting my wee hometown in the 18th century. Admittedly, I approached this book seeking grisly details of folk speaking in tongues & overcome by visions of hell. Rather, the book (written by a Protestant minister and scholar) plays down these fun bits to put a positive spin on the events and their role in the history of the Church of Scotland. Regardless, Fawcett brings the players to life on vivid colour & really shines a rare light on the Cambuslang of 300 years ago. In short, a bit dry but definitely worth reading for folk interested in local history.
