A nearly superhuman Marine finds love in a most unusual way. When duty rips him from her, he uses any means necessary to stand at her side again. Chosen to lead the most powerful space force ever assembled, because of a fluke mixing of DNA with an Alien monster, Jake Matthews spares no entity standing in the way of his mission. He vows to forge an unbeatable engine of destruction, powerful enough to force peace across eternal space. Casserine provides a vista of future America, where citizens across the galaxies pledge allegiance to one Earth nation's flag. In so doing, they birth an empire of single minded purpose, and incredible power.

Such a great read! This novel has it all, action, romance, humor, killer bugs being dropped into places that they were once cleared from, and soldiers who stand up for each other and do the right thing. I was barely able to put this book down from the start. I'm not a science fiction fan but I really enjoyed this book.
First , just a word about set up. It was a little slow the first 9 chapters. Then it took off. The first 9 chapters set the story. Bug wars, marines, a planet that is so heavy in gravity you could only crawl. Space pirates, two sets of aliens, space ships, and lots of action and humor. And of course United States Marines.
Love Bernard's books! This was no exception although it's so long it took me a while to finish. Keep up the good work and please more of John and Nick.
Since I'm not much for outer space/sci-fi stories, it took a while to read this book. Actually, Casserine was not where the action took place. It was Jake Matthews's assigned post and was the distribution center for fuel cells.
The action begins when Jake and others travel to other planets to battle infestations of man-eating bugs, rescue imprisoned slaves, fight space pirates, investigate corrupt leadership, and a few other little problems.
This is a long story with more than 100 typos and more misplaced and unnecessary commas than that. However, it's a great plot with great characters with plenty of humor thrown in. This story could have filled two or three books, but this way you get to read the story all at one time.
If you like Mr. DeLeo's other books, you're sure to like this one. He has a highly developed imagination and always gives us a unique and original storyline.
Probably the most action packed, humorous, interstellar military science fiction that I've read in years. The protagonists are a group of mariners led by the main character in a series of military operations that travel to Earth and back again to the stars. Jake Mathews, the main character, has gone a life and death struggle successfully to a lonely fuel supply outpost, when he finds himself embroiled in a seemingly never-ending conflict with earthbound politicians, enemy aliens and colonists on remote worlds. Spread and Enjoy.
The writers political views made me laugh. They remind me of the story of the frog in a well who thought it was in the ocean. The book had some good one liners though. Americans will probably rate this highly *rofl*
He is the best author to come along in a long time.
I just finished his last book in a two week period. I read them non stop. His. action .plot and a killer sense of humor make it hard to put down. Buy his books, you will never regret it.
