Jon McConal, longtime columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram , takes readers on a trip back through years of writing about Texas-its history, people, and unusual places.
I bought this because as I new resident I feel it incumbent upon me to study this grand and glorious nation/state.
Jon McConal has been a columnist for the Ft. Worth newspaper, writing about interesting finds in and around the Ft. Worth area. This book is a compilation of some of his more than 3000 columns, and tells stories mostly about people, places, and things west and northwest of Ft. Worth. So much so that I printed out a couple of maps of the area to identify and chronicle for future reference (day trips, weekends away, etc.) some of the stories he told.
The Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys festival and a few other things didn't make the maps but were of sufficient interest to warrant an extra reference in the index.
The only reason I didn't give this book five stars was that I would have appreciated it more had it focused on one aspect of the area, rather than Characters, Names of Towns, Cemeteries, Ghosts, etc. I imagine he had articles on each subject (like my favorite, Day Trips) that could have each filled their own book.
But that was a small price to pay for such an entertaining and good read.
