When Aquanette and Anginette go home to Houston to visit their mom for Christmas, they are asked to perform for one of the hottest acts in town, and the Cheetah girls will have a chance to prove that they are able to put on a great show.
The eighth book in The Cheetah Girls series is told from the POV of Aqua (I guess her twin Angie is never getting a POV book - much like how they cut her out of the movies, poor girl).
In this one, Aqua and Angie return to Houston, Texas for Thanksgiving, but while there, there is a charity concert headlined by Karma's Children (Destiny's Child anyone?) that Aqua and Angie audition for. What luck - they score the entire Cheetah Girls a trip to Texas to perform there.
I can't get over just how lucky these girls are. They might always come runner-up in the contests they take part in, but when it comes to actually scoring an opportunity, they really strike gold. Aqua and Angie happen to get through with an audition of just the two of them, and then ask the lady who tells them they got through if the other girls can perform and for the charity to PAY for THREE plane tickets OVERNIGHT from New York to Texas. A CHARITY BENEFIT PAY, I repeat, PAY, for THREE plane tickets for three girls who didn't audition for a FREE event. AND they sing their 'It's Raining Men' rip-off to get through? Nah, that doesn't sit right with me.
There is a subplot with the twins' uncle going missing for five days - that was interesting, but also it took Galleria (who has never met the uncle before) to find out where he is. I just have to make down logic for this one, because even though this series hasn't delivered in the logic department, it seriously went bananas in this one.
However, I do like how storylines follow on from each book, as I was expecting very singular stories with each book. The flow is there and I like seeing this journey unfold, despite the fact this book is clearly not written for me (at all, but I'm still reading).
Growl Power (Updated) School is out for Thanksgiving for a week for the twins because of construction at their school LaGuardia Performing Arts League. They’ll be spending the holding back home in Houston. They’re making dinner but not for their dad whose been looking thinner and thiner from just eating seaweed shakes all because of his girlfriend the High Priestess Abala. No, this dinner is for the Cheetah Girls.
Angie compliments Chanel on giving the turkey she won in the Gobbler Race in Central Park that morning to Dorinda’s family. Dorinda seems a little quiet and she says they’re lucky to be going home for the holidays. To take her mind off it, they giv her some onions to cut up. Chanel says she wishes she were going somewhere for the holidays and that they have all the fun. Little does she know Aqua thinks, they’re lives before the Cheetah Girls were boring.
Galleria is happy to be spending Thanksgiving there because her grandmother and favorite aunt are flying in. Chanel will probably be eating at Galleria’s too because her mother is going to Paris to see her boyfriend. Her dad is going to Transylvania with Princess Pamela. Chanel says they can even go to the Karma’s Children Benefit Concert, but Aqua thins maybe not. She’s not really a fan. Everyone always compares them to being as big as them one day. She’s over them!
Galleria arrives with her dad. Aqua tells Mr. Garabaldi they leave tomorrow morning. He offers to take them to the airport and bring some canolis for their mom. But they turn down his offer because they know their dad will want to take them. HE says he’ll bring the pastries in the morning. Galleria gives her bad news. The airlines from Italy are on strike. Mr. Garabaldi tells this story about how he lied to his parents when he was younger that he had soccer practice but instead went to the lake to meet a beautiful girl, but the train was on strike so he got in trouble.
Despite her father trying to make her feel better, Galleria is still upset and says she wanted the CGs to meet them. Then she tells the twins she’ll miss them. He asks when the CG’s will perform again and Galleria says who knows. Mr. G leaves and Mr. Walker arrives with the Priestess. Mr. Walker is in a bad mood and turns down Aqua’s “Aquanetta-does-it-betta-“ eggnog. Someone stole the slogan he worked on “Flee you hear me”. He gets on them about cleaning out his blender and not staying up all night cooking cause he knows they haven’t packed. Not even after telling him they’ve cooked honey-glazed turkey legs, collard greens with ham hocks, macaroni and cheese and blackened catfish with swamp rice, does he want to eat with them. Instead, he says he’s going to have special shakes with the HP.
Aballa and her crew show up and say they hope they’ve saved room for her special brew. The CG’s say their full. The twins decide to sneak Porgy and Bess on the plane because they think they’ll end up in one of the HPs brews. While Angie distracts him, Aqua will sneak their cages out to the car. While storing the cage in their dad’s room, Aqua sees something in his medicine cabnet called Fenugreek. Their dad tells them to take all the leftover food with them because he won’t be eating it and says he can’t believe he use to eat all that junk. He’s getting all the herbal supplements he needs from Aballa. (I am SO glad they left all this out in the tv movies).
When they get to the airport the twins say they feel bad that Dorinda and Channel are stuck there. Mr. Walker asks them when the CG’s are gonna perform again and Aqua says she doesn’t know. Unlike Mr. G who tells them don’t worry they will, Mr. Walker is like oh well at least we got here early. He does give them an extra 20.00. They end up confessing they brought the guinea pigs and he makes them pay to take them. They end up paying 75.00 out of their own money.
The twins decide not to tell their mother about their father’s strangeness or about his new girlfriend. Their mother seems smaller and they think its odd that she doesn’t have on heels. Her nails are chipped and her house is also a mess. There’s also about the way she seems distracted whenever they bring up Mrs. Dorathea. She says their uncle Skeeter was supposed to come with her but no one’s been able to find him.
She asks about any upcoming performances and recording but there’s -again- nothing to tell. She starts to talk about the Karma’s Children’s concert and what Skeeter is wearing (metallic purple bell bottoms, a fedora, and a red fake fur jacket) VERY PIMP ISH! Aqua says she doesn’t know if they’re going to the concert. She asks why but then she gets it. They’re jealous. Aqua asks why they should go see them. They aren’t anymore talented than they are. Their mom says they ought to be happy their doing well. If they can make it they can. When they call Galleria to tell her they made it safely, she tells them Nona isn’t coming at all. She slipped and broke her ankle. Her dad is going to be with her but she and her mother are staying. Galleria request they pray for her family.
At Big Momma’s, Aqua and Angie run into “Beetheat” a boy that made Aqua fall off the swing and bust her knee. He remarks how “different” they look. Then asks if they’ve got their tickets. Then laughs about their guinnea pigs. They reunite with their cousins Egyptian and India. They ask if the twins are going to audition. They’re looking for unknown groups for the Karma’s Children concert. The twins dial the number on the poster but they get a recorded message that gives the details. Aqua decides to swallow her pride and go to the audition. Angie says what about the CG’s. Big Momma says they should go. One monkey don’t stop no show.
Egyptian later tells them their daddy hasn’t been home in three whole days and no one knows where he is. She knows he has a new girlfriend. All they know is their daddy said “Your just like your name. Softer than a mink coat.” They call Galleria later and she tells them well it’s not like they (the CG’s) can afford tickets to come there. Their mom is going to drive them to the auditions. She says she knows something was wrong with Skeeter when he came over Sunday and his eyes were glassy. He said he was tired of trying to make everyone happy and he just wanted to go somewhere to rest in peace. She remembers him talking about his new girlfriend and saying that Wilkerson woman sure knows how to treat a man.
She then breaks down in tears and says she doesn’t know what’s worse living with their daddy and being miserable or living without him and being loney. All she does is go to work, pay bills, then get up and do it all over again. Not that she has a reason to get up with them gone. Angie says they can stay there and not go to the audition but their mother says they should go. They decide to audition with “It’s Raining Benjamins”. They tell Mrs. Walker about how Mr. and Mrs. Garabaldi meet through the personals and she says maybe they should be doing that. Angie says don’t be getting any foolish ideas. She says she doesn’t know how foolish it is and then says the chances of a black women over 45 are VERY SLIM!
Then she lets on she knows their daddy is up to something. The line is ridiculous to get in. They meet Fred and his friend (Chips) who have a group called “Fish and Chips”. They play blues. Fish and Chips make a big impression on the crowd. They give a little taste of what they can do in the line. So much so that Mrs. Walker invites them over for Thanksgiving. She doesn’t back down even when she finds out they stay at the shelter. The lady seems impressed with the twins and says she’ll let them know. They’re looking to fill about three to five warm up spots.
Mrs. Fenilworth calls and tells them they got the spot. Angie says they can’t preform without the CG’s and Mrs. Fenilworth says she can fly out the rest of the group. The others are “Diamonds in the Rough” “Miggy and Mo” and “Moody Gardens”. Aqua also gets “Fish and Chips” a spot. Skeeters car is spotted on Sycamore Road. Galleria promises that when she and the other CG’s get there, they’ll put their heads together and figure it out. Mrs. Doretha can’t come but the rest of the CG’s arrive in Houston and they go straight to rehearsals.
Galleria gets a little huffy they already choose what they’re singing but she says what’s done is done. So, they arrive at the Crabcake Lounge. Fish and Chips are already entertaining the crowds (same song “The Lost Woman Blues song). Fish gives Dorinda a lesson and she gets right into it. She mixes it up with some rap (combined with the blues). All the groups arrive and they’re told they’ve each been selected to sing one song. After it’s over, Mrs. Walker reminds Fish and Chips of the dinner invite. While Mrs. Walker prepares dinner, they talk about where Skeeter can be. Galleria says they should look in the phone book for the name Wilkerson and they find the name “Sable” and she lives right around the corner.
The can go over and pretend they’re from the census bureau. and that we need her to fill out a form, because people aren’t handing them in on time. Mrs. Walker will be the census lady—and we’ll be her kids. She can say she’s working late to earn extra money. They’ll get her sympathy and then Mrs. Walker can start to talk about her boyfriend (and hopefully she’ll talk about hers). They disguise her in a cheetah turban so she won’t be recognized. Ma says she’ll be Mrs. Cobbler (because that’s what she was gonna make for Thanksgiving). Galleria and Dorina will be “the daughters”. Channel, and the twins will be on the lookout if they see Skeeter arrive.
The lady is upset and doesn’t know anything. She hasn’t seen Skeeter either. Mrs. Walker breaks down crying but gets it together enough to drive home. All of a sudden the concert has lost its importance to Aqua. They go pay Granddaddy Walker a visit at “Rest In Peace” the biggest funeral parlor. Granddaddy tells Mrs. Walker they’ll get through this. He says Skeeter hasn’t been the same since his daddy died. He buried him (himself). Galleria remembers the twins ma said Skeeter said he was tired and wanted to rest in peace. She says they should go to the cemetery and go to his daddy’s grave.
Grandddaddy gets them a ride (in a hearse). On the way Mrs. Walker says Skeeter used to play the keyboards when they were kids. He was always beating or strumming on something. But their Daddy was always telling him to get a serious job—be somebody. So, Skeeter gave it up, and went to work for the sanitation department. She says the blues is his favorite. The driver tells them they should keep following their dreams even when it seems like someone’s trying to take them. Aqua wonders if the driver (Wille’s) dreams have come true. She doesn’t think her uncles have.
They find Skeeter in the mausoleum. He looks like a ghost. His eyes are bloodshot, his face is full of whiskers, and his clothes are all wrinkled. He scratches his head, like he has lice. Mrs. Walker says their daddy would turn over in his grave if he saw him. Skeeter says that’s why he thought he’d join him. He needed some peace and quiet. He’s tired of everyone telling him what he should be doing. Mrs. Walker screams at him so he thought he’d just hurt everyone. He says he thought their daddy could give him some answers. He doesn’t know where to turn anymore. He hates his life, his job, all of it. He doesn’t want to pick up garbage, his wife hates him, he can’t take care of his kids.
Mrs. Walker basically has no sympathy and tells him to get over it and just grow up and deal with it. This makes him ashamed. Aqua pleads with him not to leave them again and he says he won’t til the good Lord takes him. Skeeter gets to perform (and join) Fish and Chips. The CG’s do their thing and decide to stay in Houston a little longer for the Okie Dokie Corral.
My Thoughts: *What number book is this? EIGHT! And they STILL on Chanel because she ran up her mom’s credit card. LET IT GO!!! You’d think she’d ran up *their* (the Cheetah Girls) credit cards. This isn’t even Juanita. Who by the way she’s paying back. But every book they’re on her about well you ran up your mon’s credit card. MOVE ON!
*I actually kind of am feeling Skeeter in this one. He’s tired of trying to make people happy. He just wants to rest in peace. The man hates his job. He’s lost his wife. He’s broke. And does he get any sympathy? He’s depressed! Mrs. Walker is just like quit whining and feeling sorry for yourself. I almost expected her to ask him does he know how blessed he is to be able to have a job and see another day. Which sometimes you just DO NOT wanna hear. And you think she’d be a little more sympathetic considering she just told the twins how bad she’s been feeling since they and her husband left.
*But I did agree when she said, I think Miss Walker might be right “Do you know what the chances are of a black woman over fourty finding another man?” Not high I tell you that doggone much from what I’ve seen.
*Big Momma also bothered me with her statement about you know she’s not Christian that’s why he didn’t bring his new lady home. I mean REALLY? So, she’s not worth anything because she’s not Christian? Ok the things that really annoys me about this series is the author has some real prejudices against anything she considers “not Christian”. And I’m glad a lot of this wasn’t carried over into the tv movies.
Rating 5 Not very much to this one. The CG’s to not have a record deal yet are doing better than most groups starting out. They’ve performed twice at the Apollo, at a lounge in Cali, and at a big Houston concert in front of thousands. We should ALL have this kind of luck! It's kinda funny there's jealous of Destiny's Child. Just wait a couple of years Aqua and Angie. Just wait.

Halfway through the cheetah girls books and all I can say that in the second arc things do get a bit different and take a more serious approach when talking about topics such as family and dealing with people with different personalities. This was the book where we see a different side of the twins and we see their relationship with their mother’s family side.
