When I first glanced at "Welcome The Rain" by Michelle Sedas, it seemed like a sweet little inspirational book. Quotes, Pictures, Anecdotes... they are all there just like what anyone would expect with any gift book. Then I actually sat down in a cozy spot to read it.

I've dealt with Depression for 3 decades. I've tried the "fake it 'til you make it" approach, and it did more damage than good. Sure, I was the life of the party with a ready smile for everybody, but it did nothing to actually deal with the issues I had been facing for so many years. Instead, it kept them out of sight for the sake of making the people around me "comfortable." Because of my experience with this, I am a skeptic of quaint sayings & positive quotes because I've seen so many people use them to hide what is really happening inside of them. The quotes that tend to upset me the most talk about how it is better to try & fail spectacularly than to never try at all. Each time I see it or another quote about perseverance, etc. I get frustrated because there's almost this assumption that you WILL succeed, and no one wants to talk about the failure or obstacles in a real way. Exactly how are we to live in a time of brokenness when it's clear that we are facing challenges or the prospect of actually living Life during a tough time? How do we move forward?

"Welcome The Rain" is the first book I've experienced besides the Bible that actually dares to enter this uncomfortable territory. Michelle has created something that has touched my soul. As we explore the different obstacles that we may face with life, we see real stories that show us how to cope in a real way. Instead of hiding the bad or the pain, this book actually looks at it and sheds light on how these moments will shape & transform us into stronger people... if we choose to let them do so.

"Welcome The Rain" does not try to be comfortable. Instead, it dares to face uncomfortable situations from minor things like traffic or waiting in line to major things like controversy, disaster & pain. Instead of being comfortable, Michelle chooses to be comforting. I WILL be purchasing another copy as I know I will be reading the book many times. In fact, it has now taken it's place in my list of "remote island" books. The question is which book gets bumped from the list to make room?...
