Level C (Novice High) I bought this novella because it tells the story of Pluto and Proserpina, a myth I thought my students and I would enjoy and one that could be used in Latin I or Latin II. Each chapter is narrated in the first person by one of the two main characters. Pluto is featured in Chapters 1, 3, and 6, and Proserpina is the narrator of Chapters 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8.
The Latin is simple, and to me, this is more of a Novice Mid than a Novice High story. The style is different from the Andrew Olimpi novellas I’ve read, which took some getting used to (although his stories also feature first person narrators). There are fewer illustrations in Pluto to aid with comprehension, for one thing. Furthermore, the story is too short to develop either of the main characters/narrators, which makes caring about them difficult. Since most of the story is told from Proserpina’s view anyway, why not just tell the whole story from her point of view and show instead of just tell the reader why she falls for the Charlie-Brownish Pluto, as he is depicted in this version.
