Initially, "The Rite of Spring" was conceived as an intense tragedy. To some extent, Stravinsky ruined the drama. His music is so astounding that it’s usually performed as a concert piece, without the distraction of the original concept. In that format, the piece is dynamic and satisfying. Nevertheless, I believe that an awareness of the plot enhances the experience. By introducing a set of memorable characters, caught in an impossible situation, the book provides a framework for a deeper appreciation of Stravinsky’s masterpiece.
