The quintessential summer camping holiday is shown in all its quirky, hilarious moments in this unmistakably Kiwi picture book.
The text and illustrations are a perfect match. They’ll trigger memories for families who have experienced tripping over guy ropes, fishing off a wharf, barbecues plagued by flies, campfires, washing dishes in a bucket, building sandcastles, swimming, and making new friends. The story is told in rhyming verse with a sing-song beat ideal for reading aloud.
Cat Chapman’s illustrations convey the essence of summer in warm tussock colours and soft greens. There’s plenty of witty detail and activity to discover in the double-spread illustrations. The long drop with resident possum will produce giggles. A nice touch is the inclusion of grandparents in their ageing caravan. Attractive end-papers feature an array of camping gear that gets carted away on holiday.
A superb hardback publication from Walker Books who consistently produce picture books of a high standard.
This is a great picture book with lots of energy and a good sense of fun. The rhythm and rhyme are spot on. Very enjoyable and its easy to see this being read again and again.
