The Cliffs of Cairo was published in 1981 and is a real gem. The story centers around Tabby, who is an American student living abroad in Egypt because of her dad's job. Tabby gets embroiled in a mystery after buying a wooden ikon in a junk shop. This book is well written, reads like a classic Nancy Drew novel and captures the mystery of the old world. A novel like this could not be written today. This was perfect.
