As a photographer, Benjamin Katz has played an essential role in giving artists a familiar for roughly thirty years he has been making portraits of prominent artists. Wherever art is to be found, there he is, his camera unobtrusive, but always at the center of activity. No other photographer has ever been so close to the creation of art in Germany. He is particularly close to Georg Baselitz, with whom he has maintained a friendship since 1957. Innumerable photographs of this artist can be found in Katz’s archive, and a representative selection of them is featured in this elegantly designed book. They include a number of unique portraits, which allow the viewer to gain a rare insight into the work and personality of Georg Baselitz.
