Their friendship started with a schoolyard tussle. Now, the need for revenge is what binds Luke Croft and Red Connover together.
When Luke taught himself how to fire a Colt, he never imagined he’d turn into a gunman. But when his stepfather’s dodgy business dealings turn his life upside down, Luke asks Red to help him destroy the man who murdered his kin.
The road to vengeance is long and hard, and the two friends who are barely out of boyhood will need all the help they can get if they want to catch a cold-blooded killer…
I don’t know why I haven’t given westerns a shot until now. I couldn’t put this book down. It consumed me. It’s all I’ve been thinking about for days. I couldn’t stop turning pages to see what happened next. I was constantly on the edge of my seat and didn’t predict all the twists and turns. I loved the authors representation of women. He has such humanitarian morals and it shows in his writing. I want to meet this author and have tea with him, because I know he is such a kind and gentle soul just by the reflection of his values and world views through his writing. I could truly rave about this book for hours. I’m glad it was the first western I read. I am now forever hooked. As for the story itself, a true masterpiece. The characters go through their own moral compasses realigning in the most beautiful, raw, soul wrenching ways. There are many different types of people explored in this narrative, and justice is rightfully served to those who deserve their karma. Nothing is left unfinished. The ending was not only satiating, but overcompensating in satisfaction. The characters are so human. They’re not immoral superheroes, we’re told their flaws yet still root for our heroes, and that is great character development. I sing the highest praises for Ralph Compton and have turned into a forever fan just based off of this one book.
I have always enjoyed David Robbins westerns (Wilderness Series, etc.) Even with a typical plot as this novel,he makes the characters interesting And the action scenes exciting.
A good old western. I like the story, but a little too much violence for what I like. It's cowboys, good guys and bad guys story. I enjoyed it, except for some of the descriptions of the violence where the author does too good of job of describing things for my liking.
