Max loved sleeping; it was one of his favorite pastimes, so he wasn’t happy when he was woken up by someone grabbing him by the scruff of his neck and dragging him from under the covers. He was taken out into the street and flung into a waiting van. Max was shocked, he was being kidnapped! He couldn't believe it was happening to him. His fellow prisoner, already in the van, was half his size but her eyes were the same shade of pale turquoise as his own. She introduced herself as Clio, and Max promised her that he would take care of her and make sure they found their way back home. When the van door opened, they saw someone in a long dark robe with a hood pulled low over his forehead. This person was flanked by two more robed figures as the two cats were escorted towards a large stone building. The brass plaque on the door read G.T.T.C. HQ. The two Tonkinese cats were taken inside a darkened room, lit only by a candelabra on a low table. Max was scared by the tall robed man standing behind the table and he also could feel Clio trembling at his side. The man said that from now on Max and Clio would be known by their codenames: 009 Lives and Lotus Petal.

The man mentioned dangerous missions that lay ahead and said the cats had been brought there for special training because they did not want to send them out unprepared. Max already knew that his time-traveling trips into the past were being controlled by a mysterious group called The Guardians of Time. Max, Clio, a French bulldog, a horse, and other teams of many different animals were now at the Guardians of Time Training Camp to undergo rigorous training.

The 12th book in the Shadows from the Past series is Max's 4th solo adventure. These shorter stories are a break from the main adventures and provide lighter moments for young readers. This story is also a good way to help children understand how different individuals can work together to solve problems, if they accept their differences and are prepared to cooperate with each other. Max’s Undercover Adventure adds to the overall plot of the series as we begin to see that it is Max who is the true hero of all the stories, having been specially chosen by the mysterious Guardians of Time to carry out potentially dangerous missions. It leaves us wondering what’s in store for him as the rest of the series unfolds.

Our beloved Max is kidnapped in this short and snappy companion adventure, which furthers the events of the main Shadows from the Past plot a little, but is mainly just a super fun romp with some other animal companions to meet and fall in love with. Max is not a brave cat by nature and it’s always fun to see him thrown into situations where he has to rise past that and be the hero we know he can be. And there’s plenty of rooting for him to do in this tale of intrigue and competition as Max as his fellow animals train up for the larger and more dangerous missions of time travel which lie ahead for them.

How cute was Clio though? I marvel at how author Wendy Leighton-Porter can give me such accurate visuals of what these adorable animals look like from just a few lines that bring out their vibe and personality. I guess this book and the previous one feel like off shoots of the series which don’t really progress the main plot, but at this point I’m so in love with the concept overall that it feels great to have a break from the main events and just enjoy lower-stakes, more fun adventures. If I look at the series as a whole so far, the doom and gloom factor is going up (as well it should be when things get more dangerous), so the Max stories have appeared at just the right moment to provide light between the shadows. I feel refreshed from this fun outlet of animal games and hijinks and ready to delve back into the deeper, more serious side of the series now. Bring it on!

Max (along with another Tonkinese cat, a French bulldog, a whippet, a grass snake, a pygmy owl, a horse, a donkey, a tortoise, a bat, and some others I cannot recall at the moment) is recruited by the Guardians of Time to be one of their secret agents in their mission to put Time to rights. Needless to say, our large, lazy, talking cat is not thrilled by the prospect ...

(Max's code name, 009 Lives, is very cute.)

In the chronology of the series, this comes before The Shadow of The Tudor Rose.

I found only two small editing oversights in the Kindle version: Location 212, let's try and get some sleep / let's try TO get some sleep ; he realised the enormity {extreme wickedness} of the task ahead / he realised the MAGNITUDE {size, importance} of the task ahead .
