Sanguine Malum

Rate this book
The war has ended, but the bad blood remains.

Long ago, the vampires took control. Now, they run the cities and make the rules with little regard for the race they slaughtered to get there. With no rights and fewer options, some humans serve themselves up to the elite undead in exchange for protection. The rest take their chances with the ferals outside the city walls. It’s miserable, but misery can be lucrative if you’re clever enough.

Callie Flynn commands a small team at DWM – a strictly-human mercenary group in the city outskirts. They take contracts; they eliminate beasties; they get paid. It’s a better life than most free humans get. But when a scout disappears on a mission she ordered, she realizes her shoot-from-the-hip attitude may have cost her more than a promotion.

Seeking answers in the disappearance, she breaks procedure and makes contact with a forbidden source: the vampire Judge of the city. Augustin is as frightening as he is fascinating, but he is also pragmatic. With her back against a wall, Callie makes an agreement that could either set things right or set everything ablaze.

The line between friend and foe corrodes the further she digs, forcing her to question her judgment and loyalties at every turn. At the bottom of it all, she uncovers a truth more twisted and far-reaching than anything she could’ve ever expected. A truth that could cost her the thing she values most – her humanity.

Lila has spent more time in her own mind than she has being “present” in the real world, to be honest. When it comes to talking about herself, everything seems so mundane compared to the things she has seen and done in her imagination. This may have something to do with why she decided to start putting it in to words to share with others.

Lila grew up in a semi-rural town in Florida. She has always been an avid reader and writer - though she didn’t have the cojones to publish anything before now. She is also a huge fan of wasting time on the internet. She has been a waitress, a secretary, worked in retail and done manual labor… all of which paid much better than hustling as an indie author, but were nowhere near as rewarding. She loves her life as a writer and wouldn’t have it any other way. She will eat ramen every day for the rest of her life if it means that she can keep telling stories.

I've read a lot of Vampire and Zombie books and this story does bring enough of a unique take to the genre to make it a fun, exciting read. This is one book you can judge by the cover: It is dark, crisp, and full of intrigue. The beginning and end tie together with perfect poetic beauty, but don't worry, that's not all there is. The middle is full of teasing (basically me wanting Callie in the middle of a vampire sandwich!) and a fun, twisted plot that takes What's Your Price Wednesday to a whole new level, but you'll have to be a part of Lila's fan club (Look it up on Facebook: Lila's Hump Palace) to fully understand. I'm really hoping that there's a book two in the works because this story still has more to tell!

Lila is a wizard when it comes to imagery, and paints a picture that really puts you there, much like a video game. I was able to live in her world, if only for a moment. That moment was enough to reignite my love for reading, that I had long forgotten since joining the indie book scene. If you want something a little "different," than your typical vampire read, pick this up.

Not your average mosquitos

Started this book last night and I could not put it down. It is a book about Vampires but not like those you have read about before. The're some extremely funny parts in the book as well as down right steamy. I highly recommend it!

Humans have mucked it up and vampires have taken control. Callie is an amazingly, sarcastic and strong female lead. From being flippant in the face of death to slaying feral vamps, she kicks ass. Both literally and figuratively.
