Although the book is geared toward clinicians, this volume contains useful explanations of palliative care, which focuses on pain management and quality of life, and its related field of hospice care, which focuses on end-of-life care. There are clear explanations of major drug reactions, breakdowns of the symptoms that can arise during chronic illnesses, recommendations for navigating family dynamics and mental health issues, and advice on broaching death and an end to treatment with patients. A useful section discusses spirituality and existential questioning in the face of prolonged illness and/or death. The authors note that healthcare practitioners must take care not to transfer their own beliefs and opinions onto their patients. I feel better informed for handling loved ones' final days after reviewing the book.
