Matt Drake #15

Inca Kings

Rate this book
Matt Drake encounters mystery, thrills and horror in the vast mountains of Peru.

When legendary treasures from a long-lost hoard start drip-feeding through the black market, Drake and the rest of the SPEAR team are tasked to track down the mysterious seller. From Paris to Lyon and Monaco they hunt for clues through the lavish auction houses.

Then everything changes. Their single-minded hunt ends in Peru where they find remote villages beset nightly by el monstruo—monster. Unable to walk away, Drake and his colleagues promise to help and find themselves embroiled in the centre of something poles apart from anything they’ve encountered before.

As they defend the villages and search for the old Inca treasure, they are forced to confront new terrors: mountain men who abide by an ancient, ghastly practice; a desolate chateau owned by their king and an ill-advised attempt to infiltrate the depraved community’s heart.

Inca Kings comes fully loaded with action, archaeological adventure, team spirit, new revelations, and a remarkably different storyline, guaranteed to provoke your imagination.

Inca Kings - a review by Rosemary Kenny

*slight spoilers*
The SPEAR Team is on the move again in David Leadbeater's amazing 15th book in the Matt Drake series, Inca Kings. Led by Hayden, who almost ends up making the ultimate sacrifice in the most awful way possible, at the hands of 'The Cannibal King' aka Dantanion, in a remote Peruvian mountain lair, Matt, Torsten, Mai, Kenzie, Alicia, Mano, Yorgi, Smyth, (whose Christian name is revealed as Lancelot) and on/off member Lauren all have their own inner demons to deal with, as they battle hordes of 'spider cannibal' cult members and death-dealing archers who attack local villages in the dead of night.

Triggered by the French auction house's sales in Paris and elsewhere of the long-lost Peruvian treasures stolen in antiquity by Spanish Conquistadors, to ransom the Inca King Atahualpa, before disappearing forever when their ruler was savagely murdered by the foreigners.

I loved the interplay between Mai and Alicia - both deadlier than the male in most circumstances, who have each others' backs, yet act as frenemies at times and trade insults constantly. Kenzie's samurai skills with her katana make her a thrilling adversary too, yet she's vulnerable in her longing for a satisfying personal relationship, (as Matt and Alicia have together) with Torsten Dahl - who unfortunately remains resolutely loyal to his estranged wife, for the sake of their two young daughters.

As the action moves across continents and introduces new and old characters and scenarios, you'll be on the edge of your seat and biting your nails down to the elbows with fear at the dangers SPEAR face, while thrilling at their victories in inspiring and saving many villagers from the dreadful fate in the monsters' mountainside lair. If like me you've become a firm fan of David Leadbeater's epic tales of derring-do in quasi-Avengers' style, you'll be ecstatic to learn that book 16 is already on its way. Buy Inca Kings as soon as you can - you'll never look at rare steak or rack of lamb in the same way ever again - but boy, is the tingling down your spine worth it - just make sure you lock up tight and leave the lights on at night!

Shocking!!

When I first began reading I found slow going, but by chapter two I was gripped and it was relentless the action was none stop, the story was an eye opener at times also. The main baddie was a dark dark character who made my stomach turn at times! The next installment will be just as good because once you've read this book you get an idea that the action is going to begin all over again!!

Although a little bloody for my "tastes," the story line was suspenseful. The incorporation of the actual terrain of the region helped add top the story. The author seems to do a lot of research of the area used in his story lines which adds to the interest, which I appreciate. I like historical novels, also. These books by David Leadbeater are a nice alternative to those. In my opinion, he is a great story teller.

The only time I have ever given a Matt Drake series book less than a 4 star… cannibalism??? Like it would be nice if there was a warning in the description.. I skipped huge parts of this book because of it. Yuck…..

Darkness like you've never known it.

David Leadbeater gets better with every new book.
This is the darkest of the Matt Drake series, evil incarnate, a villain to rival all others and to cram so many storylines in one volume is brilliant.
Anyone who hasn't discovered this author needs to start at the beginning with Drake 1, then try all the other avenues opened by Mr Leadbeater.

You are What You Eat

The 15th in the series featuring the many characters we've grown to love. This adventure is a little different, but all the more exciting for it. Love seeing everyone's good side. A few outstanding question from previous stories are answered. But of course, internal conflicts still are evolving. 16th is promised for March 2017.

Good but disgusting

I loved this book but not as much as the others. I think the snacking our bad guy did just turned me off. Don't get me wrong, it was a great relief when you knew what his outcome was.

Again David delivers a top quality adventure for the SPEAR team. This book follows straight on from the last one, but is a more standalone story line. Again the character interaction is excellent and the story moves at a nice pace. Already looking forward to the next one.

Risky

I really could have hated this book but thankfully
the plot points were done well and the characters really
shown through. 16 should be fabulous and I love the
Idea of a similar series with new characters.
