Excellent chronological overview, summaries and critical analyses and evaluations of all of Henry James' 112 shorter fictions. The focus is on the 55 shorter fictions James included in the New York Edition of 1907-1909. But Wagenknecht also covers the 5 stories written after that edition, and provides brief comments on all the rest.

This book was preceded by The Novels of Henry James (1983); together, they represent a comprehensive response by a sensitive, scholarly, and well-informed literary critic to the whole fictional corpus of the master.
