This hands-on guide offers young readers real-life instructions for surviving on a deserted island, from lessons on cooking a snake to making a compass. Original.
Of the many ways to die on a castaway island, there are plenty that are just plain dumb. Read up and be prepared, I say. That's why I devoured Rory Storm's Castaway Survivor Guide cover to cover on Thanksgiving Day yesterday, along with the corn and green bean casseroles. Hey, be thankful when you are surrounded not only by a beautiful peninsula but also a wonderful, loving and supportive family--but remember disaster can strike unexpectedly any minute of the day. Sure, maybe on the way home from the grocery store or Pokemonning I don't face being stranded on an island with poisonous things to eat or be eaten by. But what if when crossing a bridge it collapses and I get washed out into the ferocious waters of Lake Michigan? You know the floor of that body of water is littered with shipwrecks and bodies. I will need to think quick and ration supplies, especially if my kids or a hungry Dutchman are with me. Now I can be thankful for one other thing on this national holiday: that I need not have survived a harrowing childhood, a tornado and multiple medical disasters, only to die from a superheated rock exploding in a campfire. I now know how to avoid this, plus many more survival tips should I find myself in dire straights, on a "bug steak" diet. Above all, I am reminded that the most important tool in your possession is the one behind your eyeballs. Fill it with knowledge, train it to be resourceful, and teach it to be thankful in all circumstances. Over and out.
