This book contains useful information that can be difficult to find elsewhere.
However, the organization of that information leaves a lot to be desired. The book is broken up into three parts. The first part has a section devoted to each leader of imperial Russia, and each section discusses the organization of the military under that leader, and gives basic information about military uniforms. The second section is a series of color illustrations, chronologically arranged and individually numbered. The third section is numbered and gives details regarding each uniform detailed in the illustrations.
I can understand why it was organized this way - budgetary constraints likely prevented the inclusion of color illustrations in-line with the text, as well as limiting the number of illustrations allowed. However, having to search multiple sections of the book makes the process of locating whatever information one is looking for rather cumbersome. I found myself wishing that text descriptions were provided adjacent to the pictures so that I could reference one with the other without having to flip back and forth. I am aware that many books do organize information in the same fashion as this one, but I find that a lot of those are not quite so picture-heavy. I also feel that this book would have benefited from more illustrations - it provides very few back views of uniforms, for example, and it also displays relatively few from any given time period.
