This book is written in 1983, but in many ways it felt very modern. It is still very relevant today. And while we might not talk about cults the way we used to in the 80s and 90s, they are still very much alive and well today. Not only does Bussél demonstrate the chinks and the armor of many modern day Christians, but he also shows some of the practices and thought processes that we have within our churches that prime people for cult like thinking.
A good solid read, maybe a bit dry at times but thoroughly Biblical. I appreciated the keen observations leveled at the basic human tendency to lemming after charismatic leaders, people who make us "feel good" instead of people who truthfully help us to actually be good. The author isn't too holy to remark on the fact that everybody wants to "minister" at ideal getaway spots during perfect weather, how interesting!
There's also some badly needed reflection on the fact that many traditional churches simply don't help their people meet the most basic human-bonding needs, leaving them high and dry and hurting -- and wide open to warm, seemingly loving cult overtures.
