I loved and appreciated this book, The Unknown Marina Tsvetaeva. It is available only in Russian but I found a digital copy. It is literary criticism and focused on the work of Marina Tsvetaeva so it is specialized. It is unusual because it focuses on what is not said about Marina Tsvetaeva and I very much appreciate that. I also love Elena Oscarovna Eisenstein’s tone and non-academic writing. It was a great addition to my study of Marina Tsvetaeva. Her first words “Simon Karlinsky, in 1966, rightly called Tsvetaeva a great poet, a legendary person, like Rimbaud, Andrey Chenier, Lermontov…” I was instantly won over to her point of view. I too have enormous respect for Karlinsky’s work. He inspired me with his biography of Marina Tsvetaeva in which he makes clear she loved women. We later became friends and I learned even more about the Russian queer world. Elena Eisenstein not only includes the importance of uncovering Tsvetaeva’s attractions to women in her writing, but many other insights—about her prosody, her imagery and her life. Tsvetaeva was one of the great innovators of poetry in Russian. Eisenstein does not shy away from the stifling effects of the times on her. Not only World War II but Stalinism and even her own problems during immigration. “Perhaps the most important [themes] in her last years are the theme of kinship with the world of Nature, the awareness of civil homelessness. Tsvetaeva was convinced that the Poet lives in freedom, breadth and the long view of the creative world, in the land of Dreams and Loneliness…” (my translation)
