“The gods are alive magic is afoot in Éire.”

I loved this collection of poems so much I purposely read this slowly because I didn’t want it to end. These poems made me feel connected to a land that I’ve never been to but a land I dream of. As someone who has been delving into my Irish heritage these poems were a beautiful way to connect with the history of my ancestors. The section on Irish immigrants was particularly moving and in this turbulent time when we are seeing so much hate toward immigrants, it was a beautiful part of the book to see a reminder that many of us wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for immigrants; something a lot of people choose to ignore or tend to forget. I particularly enjoyed the way the author incorporated Irish mythology and folklore as well as history into a woven tapestry. This book really felt like reading magic.

Some of my favorite quotes below:

“Song by song, story by story, even a stranger may find her way here…”

“We are people who echo our landscape…”

“The ancestors do not abandon us.
Impossible that we can dis-remember them.”

This is a magical book that delves into the rich and deep history of Ireland, it's Gods, Goddesses, and how each person, place, and thing in Ireland is imbued with spirit. Landscape, bodies of water, trees, animals, the people who live there and their forbears are featured. The creative life spirit that makes the place what it is overarches all. Holidays and what they mean, celebration practices, etc. are covered, all in the most wonderful poetry. There is a glossary at the end and links to important books to learn more about the long history of Ireland. I learned so much from the book and not just the names, places, and dates, but about the true spiritual hub that is Ireland. Highly recommended for those interested in these things.
