The Banana Bender

If only you knew all the things that go on
On a still garden night when everyone’s gone
A soft quiet evening when crickets stop singing
A tiny man enters, no knocking or ringing.

I have no idea who Tina Rantes is. Since googling the name only brings her books, I can't really tell anything about her. There's just one thing I am positively sure about her: She knows Hebrew.

There's a song that dates back to 1968, written by Meir Ariel and sung by Arik Einstein which is called "Mekofef HaBananot" which translates to "The Banana Bender". The similarities between the song and the book are too many to mention - the silence of the crickets, the groove in the apricots, the "shock" and "artichoke" pairing, etc. etc.

The other book in the "Mini Garden Folk" series, "Anna, Who Lived Inside a Banana" is lifted from another Hebrew song, "Woman in a Watermelon" (Isha BeAvati'ach), which tells of a woman who lives in a watermelon until the watermelon season is over and she has to move to live in a long, narrow carrot.

Nice try, Tina.

I found this book a delightful, fun story that kids love because the author has taken every day items,in this case fruit, and made what happens to them a tall tale. The book is full, has cute illustrations and takes children and those who love and share books with them on a great ride. This book is a good book for kids to read alone and also is a great book to read aloud and share. I am a fan of rhyming stories and the author does a great job with making the text flow with rhyming fun.
