The Age of Enlightenment changed the way mankind thought about life, culture and human relationships. In her evocative new book, The Power of Acknowledgment, Judith W. Umlas unleashes the concept of an Age of Acknowledgment we can all help bring about. In a time of celebrity worship and self-absorption, Judith s well-reasoned and heart-felt appeal is so counterculture as to be revolutionary. Imagine, as does the author, people acknowledging each other s humanity, accomplishments, talents and wisdom on a continuous basis. It might just catch on. And wouldn't that be something. This 45-minute read will change your life and the life of everyone around you!

A little bit over half way though and it is mostly the same thing said over and over again. The author has no real academic knowledge of the subject mater. (Keeps referencing the "hard" research in chapter 6.) The book is based only on her experiences.
Well, chapter 6 was a let down. Not much in the way of strong research into the topic. At least the author did not talk about the research.
Bottom line is we are expected to believe her just because she said so. It would be one thing if she had a PhD, but she does not.
Now, I can see where some of what she says may be true, but I don't think there is enough in this book to recommend it.
I was on a conference call with Judy Umlas a few weeks ago when she discussed her book and this topic of how powerful acknowledging other people will be in our lives. Then I read the book....in about 2 hours....and cried several times during the reading. I loved it and immediately recommended it to several of my clients.
The book is thought provoking. I used to feel embarrassed to acknowledge others especially those who are closely to me (like my parents and boyfriend). After reading this book, I sent my parents messages, thanking them for supporting my oversea studies and chasing my dreams. They said that my message truly made their days :)
This is a quick read that does a great job of highlighting the power of acknowledgement. It talks about some of the reasons why we don't acknowledge others more often and gives some great examples to try in your relationships.
