I read and found the original book really helpful and listened to the summary to remind me of the main takeaways. I found the reader's voice to be hard to follow--not much inflection and it just sort of ran together. But it's good to have a summary of the book.

I have found the "summary, analysis & reviews" on Hoopla & love them! Much easier to preview the books. Definitely recommend before trying the "real" book

The basic premise of the book being summarized is a very critical one to learn as the job outlook in the rapidly evolving economy changes. A new phrase, “the gig economy” is emerging to describe the job outlook. Fundamentally, it means that more and more people are working as free-lance workers that take a job for the duration of the job rather than their working life. This requires people to be emotionally and intellectually nimble, able to move in, quickly identify the issues, explore all the viable options and then implement the solution. Then, once it is done, leave.
In the words of the authors, to work in the gig economy you need to think like a designer. More specifically:
“Designers see the world differently than most people. Where others will avoid or fear problems, designers seek them out. Where others will perceive failure and give up on a task, designers will prototype solutions and test them until they find the best possible course of action. By applying a designer’s unique way of approaching problems to aspects of their lives, people can attain more lasting happiness and fulfillment.”
From this summary, it is clear that this is a self-help book that gives solid direction for working in the modern world.
There are nine key takeaways and they are all bullet points for successfully working as a free-lancer.
As someone that once made the decision to move into the gig economy when he was single with a four-year-old daughter, I remember the exhilaration and fear when I walked out of the building where I worked for the last time. If you are contemplating such a move, read this summary first. It will give you some solid pointers on how to develop the mindset that you need to prepare for the challenge.

“Designing Your Life”, was written by two faculty Stanford members, Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, who specialize in the field of Life Design. Instaread’s Summary, Analysis & Review condenses its subject work into nine Key Takeaways. I gained two insights from this Summary. I was introduced to the specialty of Life Designer. Apparently, the authors belong to a discipline that has devised methods of constructing designs that people utilize to guide their life decisions. I also picked up some thoughts on how to design my own life plan.
The Key Takeaways highlight the approaches by which a life designer confronts challenges in order to achieve the desired life and shows how they can be adapted on an individual basis. As I read them, the takeaways emphasize open-mindedness and flexibility in taking advantage of situations rather than trying to mold the world to conform to the individual’s preconceptions.
I think that I have benefited from this Summary by becoming aware of the concept of Life Design and Life Designers and the thoughts it raised on how I approach the challenges and opportunities that life presents. I do not have a desire to read Burnett’s and Evans’s work. My impression is that it is a “how to do it” book in a field that may not lend itself to a “how to do it” process. For those who are looking for the tools with which to assemble their own life design, Instaread’s Summary, Analysis & Review is a great aid in determining whether Burnett and Evans’s work is among the tomes to be chosen for further study.
I did receive a free copy of this book without an obligation to post a review.
