The White Wolf

Rate this book

The snarling wolf swept from the hills to Tucker Crosden's spread. It slaughtered his dogs...but one survived. For the dog called White Wolf was different, born and bred to be a champion...and destined to be a leader among wolves.

The wolves made this dog their own. And soon Crosden's prize had learned merciless rules of the wild. Fearless of any danger, White Wolf ran, teeth bared, at the head of the pack on savage raids through the wilderness. But thrown together again by a trick of fate, Crosden and White Wolf face each other. And White Wolf must choose between the blood-hungry laws of nature - or those of man.

Max Brand's action-filled stories of adventure and heroism in the American West continue to entertain readers throughout the world. Brand penned over 200 full-length Westerns in his career, including Destry Rides Again and Montana Rides.

THE WHITE WOLF by Max Brand tells the tale of a Bull Terrior pup that was carefully bred that becomes separated from the rest of the litter who were killed, only to be adopted by a wolf when he stumbles into the middle of her litter unnoticed. Nameless, he becomes known and feared as the "White Wolf", although he is constantly in question as to his actual heritage among the pack.

Max Brand writes an interesting tale of the "wolf", sometimes from the world as seen by the humans involved in the story, and at other times from the perspective of the animals including human-like conversations taking place between the animals in an almost children's book-like approach, yet the violence and survival of the fittest aspects prevent it from being fit for young minds.

Faust (Brand) at other times has employed this approach of having animals engage in elaborate conversations that has always seemed somewhat strange to me, and I often wonder if he wrote in today's day and age if he would alter this, or at least I'd like to imagine he would.

Worst Max Brand book I've ever read. Incredibly different story presented on the back cover than the one within the pages of the book. I was expecting a rip roarin' Western about a dog breeding gunslinger, but instead got a weird mixture of White Fang and Redwall.

I liked the story very much. There was some great descriptions of conflicts between the black and the white wolf and La Sombra and also there was some great descriptions of landscapes. I think the point of the story was to develop the character of the white wolf, which was really a bull terrier. I didn’t much like the character of Croston. I can’t remember his first name. I thought, however, that the change in the character between the beginning and the end was a little too unbelievable but then this was 1926 and so maybe my reading taste are a little bit more sophisticated. That said, I like to go back and read things that were written back in the early 20th century because they are so different that they are almost refreshing. I actually looked up Max brand because I couldn’t remember when he passed away. I was surprised to learn that he had a different name and Max brand was one of his pin names. I have read other books by Max brand. I liked the dog. And I even liked La Sombra the wolf. Reading about the times when he would howl at the moon I always remembered that I don’t think I’ve ever heard the sound of a wolf because I live in the city. So I was thinking I should go find a recording of one. I live in a semi rural area, but there aren’t any wolves hanging around here. There are foxes, but those are different. Even if I liked the story, I wish that the ending had been different. I wanted him to return to the pack and live happily ever after :-) but it was good for Molly and her father to have the dog returned because it gave them peace of mind. My imagination runs wild. I think that he would get restless again and go out to meet his former pack, though they would probably kill him because of his closeness to humankind. In my imagination, he could come back and lay by the fire again. Maybe that’s what Max brand wanted us to do in the first place

If you like classic animal stories you will like this one for sure. This one is very formal in its tail it is one of the few books I have read with animal dialogue. Remember this was written in 1926 so perhaps the style is more stilted. But I have read other Max brand books and so I don't remember them being quite so formal. This tells the story of a dog raised by a wolf and how it survives and has to make choices between Wolfpack Ant-man. I wouldn't say it's quiet in the style of Jack London for Max brand has his own voice. You will be happy you decided to read this book.

It took me a while to get through this book as there are many scenes where I feel the author is too long winded. I do think this book is good for the time it was written and it is an interesting plot and has an enjoyable ending that partially redeems it.

A great read! This book is a bout a bull terrier that is raised by wolves and is told from the perspective of the dog and the man that bred him. Definitely worth a read.
