First and foremost to the author:

How dare you. How dare you make me fall in love with these characters and have my heart ripped out in the end. I was a blubbering mess when I finished. That was by far the most unexpected turn of events and it literally destroyed my inner soul. And I absolutely loved every bit of it with every fiber of my being.

Now that I got that off my chest, Cecily Wolfe has once again captured my heart with her cast development. None of these characters are your standard run of mill characters that you see in a young adult romance. There are sexual situations, so if you’re not comfortable with your teen reading about that then this is probably one you’ll want to keep away from them. But in my opinion, I think it suitable for 16 and up, it’s really nothing worse than what you see or hear in a pg-13 movie.

Every young girl has that older man in their life that they just fawn over, mine was my science teacher of the 9th and 11th grade. My goodness, I don’t remember anything I learned during those classes. So while reading this book, it really brought back to the mindset I had during my high school years. Hence why I was so devastated by the ending. Believe me, this is one you’ll want to read it, this is not your standard twist.

The way this was written, was different from most books I’ve come across. You have every character point of view coming into play. At first, I was really hesitant on that, I didn’t see how all these Points of views could morph to tell the story of Francesca. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that the story entwined so well with these characters than to have written it in another format I don’t think would have been successful of a story.

Most coming of age story I find to be somewhat unrealistic especially when they try to cover the romance department. It’s a fine line to walk when you’re writing about high school students. And Wolfe has no problem waking that line. There’s enough push to keep you intrigued but not enough that you appalled at what you’re reading. Meaning you really do get a good insight into these young minds, Francesca, Tricia (best friend #1), Mitch (Best friend #2), Ricky (Twin brother) And Ashley ( New girl). It’s a large cast of teens/young adults to cover in one book. This book wouldn’t be possible without it though.

Oh and don’t forget the most unforgettable mom award goes to Francie and Jane. I mean my goodness, you’d think these two women as similar as they are could become the best of friends but when you watch them interact with each other while you know their true intentions is just a ball of sarcasm and for someone like me, it is brilliant.

You have the enchantment of the mysterious Mr. Long and his quip personality. I still and probably will find myself often thinking about his relationship with Francesca and what pondering his true motives. If they are as pure as he comes across in the book or if he has longing for is lost love.

So if you’re looking for something new, something that is not your typical read, a weekend book, a long flight or long road trip book, then this is it. You won’t be disappointed.

Reckless Treasure is a quick read full of drama, money hungry people who use others, love triangles, from riches to rags, and family. Francesca is almost out of high school which means she is almost out of that town and away from her hateful, selfish family. In the few weeks before she can leave, Mr Long comes around in his expensive suit and attention all for Francesca. Loving her older neighbor who is with her mother has made her feel pretty unwanted and undesirable, so she gladly soaks up the attention that makes her feel pretty. Unfortunately, this causes problems not only for her, but for her best friend Mich as well.

Francesca is intelligent and has many opportunities in front of her. The only thing on her mind is getting as far away from her family as possible however, so we don't get to see just how far her potential could go. She is quiet but full of life, bold enough to tell her brother no when he begs for her hard earned money to pay back some of his 'friends'. She is also oblivious, as her best friend is in love with her and she can't see it. However, growing up with a mother who is jealous of her and a brother who just wants her money has left her feeling wasted and everything but special. So when the opportunity arises to feel such attention, to know someone cares even if perhaps their intentions are unclear, she takes it. She leaves her family behind but who could blame her?

Ricky, her brother, is a rather disturbing character. He doesn't like his mother or sister, or anyone really. But he acts as if he dotes on their mother as he learned from the best what to do to get what he wants. He constantly drinks and parties, and thinks horrible things about his sister. At times I felt bad for him because he didn't get to pick his mother. However that doesn't change who he became. Ricky likes to get girls drunk so he can take advantage of them. He is forceful and enjoys when they're unconscious. This could have been an issue dealt with and made known, but nobody did anything to stop him. They knew what he liked to do and just left him to his own devices.

Mitch is Francesca's best friend. He is kind, caring, devoted to her, and she is constantly the center of his attention. He supports her no matter how much it can hurt him, and he stands by her side no matter what. Maybe they wouldn't be good together, maybe they would be great together. What matters is that they have each other. Their bond is so strong and real that you can't help but yearn for one of your own. Even if it's just friendship.

This was an enjoyable read despite some loose ends and confusing situations. The author gives us an in depth view on how the people in out families can affect us. Francesca managed to get out mostly untouched by her mother's ways, but nobody can deny that a part of her mother lives within her.

It took me a while to get into this book because I couldn't figure out exactly who the characters were and if I liked them. But around page 100 they became more clear and the relationships between them developed by this author were really special as was the setting of this story. I loved the neighborhood and it condos. The way that the author described the place where her characters lived was really beautiful. Also there is love, sex, and jealousy which makes for a great story.

Wow, ya'll, I think this book is like, the romantic equivalent of Game of Thrones, but no one dies, or that episode of America's Next Top Model where Tyra loses it. WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU. I got invested in all of these characters, rooting for certain things to happen, only for the author to be like, not today, Satan.

The book is told third person from the point of view of several characters, a lot of them wholly unlikable. A few of them, I really wanted to yank from my kindle and punch in the face myself. In the middle of all these characters, you've got Francesca, Trish, Mitch, and Henry that I was rooting for, even if I had my side eye stink eye on Henry for a little while because I didn't know where his motivations lie. Oh, Mitch, WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU.

This is kind of like an old fairy tale. A poor princess, evil step mother or mother, the fairy god mother is actually a man, and it's not exactly what you think it is when you start reading. But it was an enjoyable read.

This was a different type of book for me. There are quite a few characters that share their point of view in this story. When reading, you notice they are all connected with either bringing Francesca happiness or misery. She comes from a poor family with a mother who doesn't care much for her, a father who walked away, and a brother who is selfish and greedy. Her best friends help her deal with living in a loveless household. Upon further reading, Francesca reveals her feelings for Jerry, while Mitch reveals his feelings for Francesca. The only escape from all the anguish and drama is her late grandmother's romantic crush. It's an interesting story with much detail that allow you to connect with each character.

An okay read

This story wasn’t at all what I was expecting when I started it, and while that was sorta okay, it also sorta wasn’t okay. I think the problem for me was in the author telling me the story rather than using the characters to show it to me. It kept me from sinking into the story like I wanted.
Overall, I mostly enjoyed it and would give this author another try. I really liked Francesca. I just wish the story would have ended better for her.

Cecily writes like no one else.
I can't explain, you have to read it for yourself, but it's beautiful, I assure you.

Funny, but while I was reading, I saw movie clips. I was so into this story!

I don't know what else to say than bravo. I loved it! The writing, the characters, the way this story was told, everything!

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for the opportunity to review this book!

If you are looking for a happy go lucky book, this is not the book for you. Filled with teen angst, selfish and cold-hearted adults...you spend a good majority of the book wanting to smack one or more characters. You cannot help but be drawn in to Francesca and Mitch’s world...rooting for what surely must be meant to be. With twists and turns, everyone out for number 1, this book keeps you turning pages until the very end.

An intriguing story of unconfessed love and questionable lust.

Centered around a teenage girl this story intertwines the lives of the people around her, whether she wants them in her life or not.

You too with fall in love and/or loathe with at least one character, if not several, and be stunned by the ending which I can't decide if its happy or not...

Either way, it's a great read.

Reckless Treasure by Cecily Wolfe caught my attention from the first few chapters. Told from various points of view, I read page after page trying to figure out how all these character’s lives intersected. The book was well paced and I didn’t have to wait too long to find out.
The novel has an interesting and eclectic set of characters, each of whom could be described by a single word—sweet, innocent, despicable, loyal, untrustworthy, besotted, generous, trashy, sad, confused, ignored, opportunistic.
The dynamics and the machinations between the characters were intriguing and I often found myself shaking my head in disgust at the parental figures in the story, while smiling at the beautiful relationship between the three close friends, Francesca, Mitch and Tricia.
Although Francesca is continually put down and ignored by her family, the entire story revolves around her and the connection she has with each character, the most unusual one being with Henry, an older gentleman, she’d only recently met.
Henry seems to think it’s his mission to care and protect Francesca simply because she is the spitting image of a long past love. She turns out to be the granddaughter of the woman he’d lost his chance with and had long passed away. Henry’s motives perplexed me. I’m not sure if he saw her as the granddaughter he would have had or if he simply had an innate need to care for Francesca because she was part of the woman he loved and he saw how abysmally she had been treated—or maybe something a little creepier, although he didn’t seem that way. He was always a refined gentleman.
I gave this book four stars because of the ending. It left me a bit confused, pondering some of my earlier theories, and not feeling very hopeful for Francesca’s future happiness. I thought there were some unanswered questions, and my heart broke for one of the other main characters. Overall, I enjoyed the book but it didn’t leave me with a good feeling. Definitely not a fairytale.

Reckless Treasure feels like a Victorian morality tale that’s been updated to the 21st century. A condo complex replaces the pastoral village, and a tea party is a pool party. A fancy ball? Prom, of course.

The novel is told from multiple viewpoints, sometimes two or three in a single chapter. The characters are manifested in black-or-white virtue with no doubts raised about how the reader should feel about them.

There’s mom Francie, who rapaciously chases money and men, boob-obsessed Ricky, saintly Francesca, lovesick Mitch, looking-for-a-break Jerry, and elderly Mr. Long who still pines for his now deceased girlfriend from decades earlier. The most interesting character may be Tricia, who’s had a baby and given it up for adoption. She’s set to graduate high school and attend an out-of-state college, the latter of which has caused her parents to withhold financial support. Yet Tricia is one of the few characters not to relate the story from her perspective, an authorial choice I’m not sure I understood considering the number of characters who get center stage.

The pacing is languid with the first ten percent devoted to Francesca and Ricky finding rides to school and Mr. Long going for a cup of coffee. Although it picked up at the halfway point, the reliance on exposition and myriad perspectives prevented me from getting absorbed.

A rich cast of characters, none of whom fit neatly into the stereotyped pigeon holes you try to squeeze them into. Reckless Treasure tells the tale of Francesca. A high school senior just trying to keep her head down and make her way to the finish line that is her high school graduation. Obstacles standing in her way include a scheming family. Her twin betrays her at every chance. Her mother's solution to her own failing youth is to have Francesca trade on her own looks-- and share any resulting good fortune with her family. Her best friend, and her shelter in the storm, who has long been hiding his own romantic feelings, shakes her foundation when he asks for more. She is even up against herself, as her own raging hormones and teenage emotional maturity draw her to the older man next door. Her saving grace? A wealthy older man with fond memories of Francesca's grandmother.

Wolfe tells her story from every point of view available. This is jarring at first, but you come to appreciate the different insights available to you from first person vs third. This isn't the story you are expecting. The accepted genre conceits are thrown out the window and we are rewarded with a more realistic chain of events.

Of course, I can't resist a Henry James re-telling (well, sometimes I can) but this is one of my favorites (the original) and there are so many Easter eggs here that I don't even know where to start. If you've read the original, there are sooooo many references hidden within the story that it is almost distracting, but not quite in a bad way. It is rather dramatic on its own - and much more explicit than the original, obviously - and is quite a soap opera of family drama, romance, and bad neighboring (really bad neighboring) that readers certainly don't have to be familiar with the original to enjoy. The brother in the original, Harold, is one of the characters I most hate in all fiction, and Ricky, this version's equivalent, is just as bad - perhaps more so because his crimes are detailed. The ending is as the original - not quite an ending, and I can see from other reviews that some readers have problems with that. I don't think every story needs a big red bow to finish, and this is one of them.

Reckless Treasure by Cecily Wolfe

Genre: Romance

About the book: Francesca's cannot wait to get away from her trashy mom and her hustling twin brother. She crushes on one guy while the one who loves her, her best friend, is right under her nose. A man comes to town and offers her the world. But what will she sacrifice?

Review: I enjoyed how the stories had different POVs but it was never confusing. The story got you hooked quickly and covered a good amount of material in a relatively short time. My only complaint is that I want to know more of what happens.

A Modern Victorian Tale

I struggled with whether to give Reckless Treasure four or five stars, and I finally chose five, because the author took risks, and that should be encouraged.
Risk #1 - Reckless Treasure has a sizeable cast of characters and is told from multiple points of view. This makes it seem a little jumpy in spots, but the author does a good job with illuminating all of her characters.
Risk #2 - If you're looking for a traditional romance where everything works out for the main character like you want it to, fugedaboudit. The story is realistic, about real people with real flaws who don't always make the best plans. The story is far from a tragedy, but the ending is bittersweet, and leaves the reader with questions about what may happen next. Who knows, maybe Author Wolfe has a sequel in mind...
Risk #3 - The author included a lot of detail, which tended to slow the story from time to time, but it did add a richness that's absent in many other books in the genre.
To sum up, if you're looking for an average escapist romance where the protagonist and her beau stroll of into the sunset and live happily ever after, choose a different read. But if you like stories about real peole with real issues, give Reckless Treasure a try.

This is the third book from this author I have read and again, although the genre is not my most preferred, I was quite taken with the story. That comment coming from a 53 year old male may seem a tad strange, but it's not the story per se, it's the writing. It's the talent of the author to craft a story in such a fashion as to keep the reader focused on the topic at hand whatever that genre. This is what makes, not only a good story, but a good author. Ms. Wolfe has that ability.
This story, as such- was also able to re-introduce some long buried memories of my own, that to be completely honest, were not the most pleasant but, were pleasant enough to have enjoyed reliving, solely attributed to the style of the writing...
Interesting, yet also- another trait of an accomplished writer.
Some grammatical issues that one more edit would have indeed solved, plus a fascination with a certain part of the female anatomy I found to be somewhat overzealous, but I believe I understand the reasoning.
Certainly recommended.

I enjoyed this book. It is quite hard to write a review without giving anything away but, whilst the storyline is actually very simple, the characters are described very effectively from their own differing points of view. Like them or hate them, slap them or hug them, they are realistic. Maybe there is an option for a sequel, I don't know. There is a conclusion but do readers agree with it? A compelling and interesting story.

A very intriguing book and written in an unusual way, with the use of many POVs. About 8 people tell the story, with Francesca being the central figure in all of their stories.

I did find it difficult to get into this book, due to the multiple voices being used, but from about 30% in I was hooked.

This is one book that is going to stay with me, for whilst it has an ending it is also left in such a way that the story could continue and I’ll be thinking up the possibilities.

Highly recommend.

Complex Cast of Characters

While Reckless Treasure is not a genre I typically read I was quickly drawn into the various characters and their complex lives presented in the novel. Their own private “agonies of life” made the story catapult forward although the many point of views made it a little difficult to follow along. But that might just be a matter with me, the reader. However, reading the unfolding story of the characters, what makes them “tick” and their relationships with one another made for a hard to put down book.

After finishing this book, I had to take some time to reflect on how I felt about it. The synopsis threw me off a bit. I went in expecting certain story and ended up with something different. The book has multiple points of views and I felt that it took away from the story it could have been. There were too many loose ends and unfinished business. I kept waiting for something big to happen. The author did a great job in creating these characters though. Some you liked and some you wanted to slap. Well done Miss Wolfe.

I really wanted to like this book but it just didn’t happen. This book just wasn’t for me. I would like to read other works by this author. I give this 3 stars.

This story is a slow indepth development of the characters. Mitch's love for Francesca is deep, but he doesn't want to ruin their best friend status. Francesca has a crush on the older neighbor. Her mother, Francie, is an opportunist! Always looking for a man with money to use, and encouraging Francesca to be more than friends with the rich boy, Mitch.
Along comes Mr. Henry Long. He's infatuated when he sees Francesca, a duplicate of his long, lost love. When he finds out that she is the Granddaughter of his beloved Julia, he wants to get closer to her and offer an opportunity she can't refuse.
I enjoyed listening to this story narrated by Greg Young. 🎧audiobookobsessionreviewer🎧

This is not a HEA YA romance read - this is a heat wrenching read about hurt and betrayal. I have to say that really the only character I am truly heartbroken for is Mitch. This read has a multitude of in depth characters that the author delivers to us beautifully. However these characters are anything but beautiful with a myriad of flaws which anyone can relate to - nobody's perfect - but really this book will suck you in and spit you out and leave you wanting to know more. The narration was a bit stilted at times but still came across very well. Well written and enchanting but at the same time disappointing.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

This book is about Francesca, who is weeks away from graduation and doesn't know what to do with her life. She doesn't have a mother to help her since she is only jealous of Francesca, her twin bother is just a plain mess, and a father that she doesn't know what happened too. Everyone just wants to take advantage of her except two people. Her childhood friend that has loved her all her life and Henry, an older guy that was in love with her grandmother. So the question is... who will she choose down this path that she is trying to figure out.
This story line makes you go back to your own memories of high school and those challenging days of what to do after. What if we were given the choice that Francesca had, would we have taken it?

I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Cecily Wolfe!

This book took me by surprise. It was unlike anything I'd ever read. It was hard coming up with a rating for this one, as I had no similar book to compare it to, so I decided to rate it on originality (check), intrigue (check), and plot (double check).

What really impressed me about this book are two things; how the author does not fall into the "standard" plot lines we typically find today, and how complex her character web is. There are so many integral characters to this story, and it is fascinating to see them all interact.

Wolfe demonstrates in this book that many people are after something, and will do anything to obtain it. In this particular case, it was money. The author really portrayed well how cunning greedy people can get. It's all about personal gain, and at times, it's really disheartening.

I loved how the ending is not what we expect, and how she was brave enough to stick to her guns, and write an unconventional finale. I felt that the ending of the book is fitting, and satisfactory, despite it being different from norm. *cue applause*

This book.. where to begin.

First off I absolutely LOVE the innocence of Francesca and Mitch, I was drawn in to their characters right from the beginning, but it seemed as if they were a little too naïve for their age. Francie was aggravating and irritating and I felt as if I was in the book feeling all of the angst and drama along with the characters, she was annoying in her ways and the way she was so childish with everything, especially how jealous she was of Francesca. Mr. Long was sweet and loving and everything you expect out of a true gentleman and I fell in love with him from the beginning, even if he was a little misguided with his affection in the beginning, but I loved that he could see Francesca for who she was. This book leaves you waiting for the other shoe to drop so to speak, and the agony, love, and every other emotion in between was there and right at the forefront the entire time. This wasn't the HEA I was hoping for and it left me wanting more. I am hoping there is a second book because I just HAVE to know... What happens next?! The ending left more questions than answers for me and seemed a little abrupt and like there was something missing..

When i first started this book it took a little bit to get off to a good start, but when i did really get into it i started getting certain feelings for the characters. I really disliked the mother and francesicas twin brother..some of the stuff was a little hard to swallow. I didnt really start getting mad at the whole book till the way it ends. I dont know why but just not how i seen things ending . But its a really good book till about the end then it might upset you a bit lol... i hope there is going to be another one to explain the ending though because i would read it . I need answers lol.

I had a hard time deciding what to rate this book. It was so much going on at once and so many different character that it was confusing
. The basis of the plot was good, but the execution was a little hard on the reader. There were so many un answered questions but you wanted to know what would happen next. The author did a good job of making you feel dislike for those who wronged Francesca.

This was the first book that I have read from Cecily Wolfe. It unsettled me a little - not the story itself which is told from different viewpoints - but the way it ended....not quite a HEA.
That said, I did enjoy this book of a girl trying to make good, while her lazy brother and self absorbed mother try to use her to make their own miserable lives more worthwhile.

I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book.
