هنري فارمر مستشرق إسكتلندي تخصص بالموسيقى العربية، كتب هذا المؤلف لإثبات تطوير العرب للنظرية الموسيقية وتأثيرهم على النظرية الموسيقية الغربية. الكتاب كتب بسنة ١٩٣٠
هذا الكتاب ينقسم إلى قسمين، الأول هو أصل الكتاب والثاني هي ملاحق للكتاب كتبها المؤلف للرد على منتقديه
الكتاب بإسلوب علمي، فمن لا يملك أي خلفية موسيقية (مثلي) لا يصلح له الكتاب.
أما الترجمة فينقصها الكثير، فجزء كبير من أسماء الاعلام والآلات الموسيقية والمدن والكتب تركت باللغة الانجليزية بدون ترجمة ولا تعريب! حتى بعض الأسماء العربية لم تترجم!
