Prepare yourself. It’s a competition like no other.
Think: The Hunger Games meets The Selection.
The last one standing wins the man.
Meet Morgan LeFaye Woodenson. She has her life planned out. She’ll marry Sawyer, the love of her life, and they’ll run into the sunset to be nomads, surviving off the land, not reporting to anyone, free to live their lives as they see fit.
At least, that was the plan until the imprisonment.
When reagent Orinthal’s wife dies suddenly, Faye is forced from her home and thrown into an arena to compete with every other nineteen-year-old girl in Sector Sixteen for the highly coveted place at his side. If she doesn’t win, she dies; if she does win, she loses everything she loves.
Deception and ruthlessness fill her, and she’s determined to find a way to hold on to her dreams—even if that means becoming someone she never thought she’d have to.
Jo Michaels loves writing novels that make readers gasp in horror, surprise, and disbelief. While her browser search history has probably landed her on a list somewhere, she still dives into every plot with gusto, hoping "the man" will realize she's a writer and not a psychopath about to go on a rampage. Her favorite pastimes are reading, watching Investigation Discovery, and helping other authors realize their true potential through mentoring. She's penned the award-winning Pen Pals and Serial Killers series and the best-selling educational book for children, Writing Prompts for Kids, which has rocketed the kids that use it into several awards of their own.
Most of Jo's books feature the places she's lived: Louisiana, Tennessee, and Georgia. That's given her a special amount of insight to what makes those locations tick. Her works are immersive and twisty, and she wouldn't want it any other way.
Welcome to the world of Sector 16, a place where every 10 years each 19 year old girl must fight to the death to win the coveted title of consort to the Reagent. This was never the path that Morgan Le Faye Woodenson was meant to take; but the early death of the Reagents current consort before the 10 years cycle had completed, throws Faye’s world into chaos.
She is happy, living with her potion maker father and is in love with her boyfriend Sawyer. When the reality of her situation arrives she and Sawyer plan to flee, she packs for her journey and discovers a strange potion locked away, it must be something worth taking if it’s locked away right? All packed up and ready to go, instead of rendezvousing with Sawyer, she is met by palace guards to take her to the training grounds - she is too late.
Thrown in with the other unexpecting 19 year old girls they are forced into training for the macabre trial she must undertake, although she is distracted in her training by the Reagents guard Grant, to whom she has a greater pull toward than she has ever known. But she’s in love with Sawyer, what’s a girl to do?
When she least expects she is thrown into the trials for real and must fight for everything she holds dear, her family, her new found friends and her freedom.
What comes next is so full of twists and amazing set pieces, I wouldn’t dream of summarising further! Despite being a strong contender for the trials, Faye is actually incredibly vulnerable, she has had a pretty sheltered and happy upbringing, it stands to reason she wants to try and fit as many life experiences as she can into what little time she potentially has left. I loved her as a character and the fact that she doesn’t have all the answers and that her actions do directly impact on others, made her relatable. The romance is steamy and the peril is real, I couldn’t put it down, until sleep eventually won the argument, but it was picked back up as soon as I could.
This story has so many elements to it and finishes off in a very different way to how it begins. Yes, you could give comparisons to similar stories in the genre, but for me it became so much more. The subtle comedy moments woven in gave it a lightheartedness at times, which you didn’t know you needed until they made you laugh out loud (well they did for me any way, perhaps it’s my macabre sense of humour.) I honestly could have kept on reading and reading. A highly commended 5* from me.
Not what I expected at all - even better! When the Regent's wife dies three years before the tyrant is due to trade her in for a new bride, all nineteen-year-old females in Sector Sixteen are rounded up for a trial like that of the 'Hunger Games'. Faye had her life planned out with Sawyer; the love of her life. Only everything changes that fateful day. She must fight til the death; or does she? So many things happen once she arrives at those dreadful iron gates. New relationships and allies are formed and traitors are revealed. Will Faye be victorious? This is an absolute must-read! There's so much to be said about this book, but if I say more, I'll leave spoilers. Just know, if you read it, you definitely won't be disappointed! 5 Magical stars!
What a great read! Just like the synopsis says this is sort of like a cross between Hunger Games and the Selection but full of magic and shifters. What more could you really want? Well I’ll tell you…tragedy, love, hate, and a great villain! Faye, along with all other 19 year olds are brought to an arena and are expected to fight to the death and the winner gets to marry the ruler, Orinthal. He takes a new bride every ten years but his current wife died. These girls have no say in being part of this or not, no choice. Faye has an incredibly hard time with this as she had a plan for her life. She makes friends with some of the other girls and has no idea how she will be able to kill them. But she plans to win so that she can take out Orinthal as well. The bonds that she makes with some of the characters before the arena become incredibly strong. Including a certain guard named Grant. They have no idea why but they have a magic pull to each other but can’t express this or they could be killed. Once in the arena Faye meets some beings that she thinks are monsters. But what she really needs to figure out is who the real monsters are and exactly who she can trust. She is constantly running in multiple directions trying to figure out what to do. Crazy twists and turns pop up and her long lost mother shows up with some crazy truths. I can’t give you much more as I do not want to spoil the story. It was nothing like I expected it to be. The world that has been built will pull you in and as the characters come to life you will not want to put this down. It’s action packed both magically, emotionally, and physically *wags eyebrows*. It’s a great spin and a must read!
Morgan LeFaye Woodenson plans to marry Sawyer and live a blissful life. However when the Regent's wife dies suddenly, she is suddenly forced from her home, and has to compete with all the other 19 year old women in a battle (based in an arena) where the surviving competitor wins the position of his wife. Can Faye hold on to her dreams and not become become something that she despises?
This was a different story to what I expected (which was good). It was well written and had lots of drama and intrigue. There were plenty of surprises and it was a great new twist on the Othala Witch story.

This was entertaining, and as it says in the synopsis, definitely has elements of The Hunger Games and The Selection. When the regent's wife of Faye's sector dies, girls who are 19 years old are taken from their homes to fight to become the new wife of the regent, and Faye just so happens to be 19, so she is taken to the regent's palace where she trains to kill the other girls there. Faye isn't happy about this, since she has to leave her boyfriend and she doesn't want to be involved with the regent, so she wants to find a way to escape, but there are other things at play, so things don't go quite as Faye may have planned, and on top of that, she is finding herself drawn to one of her guards. I really enjoyed all the action and magic use, and the story was fast-paced and kept me reading. I liked Faye alright, but I didn't really like how teeny-bopper she is, but she's only 19, so I suppose it is too be expected, and she does have her moments when she did kick butt! Also, the romance was cute, but there were some weird moments between Faye and some other characters that I could've done without, and I wished the romance felt a little bit deeper in emotion, but I still enjoyed that aspect. There's also lots of cool, strange creatures, and the story was interesting. This is the first book by Jo Michaels that I've read, and based off of this, I would check out more of her books.
Faye Magic by Jo Michaels is the 16th book in the Othala Witch Collection. It is the story of Morgan LeFaye Woodenson, a 19 year old young woman living in Sector 16. When the Reagent Consort unexpectedly dies, Faye and all other 19 year old girls are thrown into the arena to compete, by killing all of their opposition, to be the new consort. The problem is that the reagent is a very old man and nobody really wants to be joined to him for the required ten years. As the girls battle surprises, dangerous lifeforms such as ravagers and giant scorpions, and also each other, some surprising alliances form. When Faye's long lost mother makes an appearance, things take on a whole new twist.
I really enjoyed this book. It was an exciting read, and kept me turning pages until the end, and wishing for more when it ended. It is a standalone novel and you don't have to read any other books in the collection to be able to easily figure out what is going on. Besides the action and adventure, there is also a love story woven into the book. I'm glad I gave this book a chance.
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and am submitting an unbiased review freely.
This story definitely had the feel of Hunger Games and several other dystopian YA books out recently. I did feel however, that the author put her own twist on this theme and characters.
Faye is in love with Sawyer. Faye is a witch & Sawyer is a wolf shifter - their romance is forbidden in their sector.
The Reagent of Sector Sixteen's wife dies - this means that there must be a trial from all 19 year old females for a new wife. With no warning, Faye is swept up by the Reagent's guards, with all other 19 year old females to compete in the trials.
The girls train, Faye makes friends even when she knows she shouldn't. Another twist is that she feels and unexpected pull or connection to one of the Guards, Grant.
Faye is a bit immature and waffles around between the two guys a bit. Yet, I still found her likeable once she seemed to get over herself.
There are definitely a few twists thrown in, nothing earthshattering, but still and enjoyable read.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy.
This highly imaginative tale of fae and prophesies kept me pleasantly entertained. The characters were all very endearing and I found this storyline suitable for any age. I appreciated that the romance aspect was kept very clean and on a lighter scale. The heroine of course had somewhat of a conflict when it came to her heart but was very glad that it wasn't made too heavy and emotional. This book flows rally well and makes for a great read for a lazy afternoon. There is no cliffhanger yet I do find myself wondering what is to come next for these characters if at all. This voluntary review is based against an advance copy.
Faye Magic by Jo Michaels forms part of the Othala Witch series.
This instalment follows Morgan LeFaye Woodenson as she attempts to navigate life in Sector 16. She is unprepared for twist in fate that has been thrown her way.
I have to begin by saying that I LOVE this series. Every book I've read in the Othala Witch world so far has been amazing and Sector 16 is no different.
It is exactly like the blurb says and sits somewhere between The Hunger Games and The Selection. It is a perfect adult dystopian/urban fantasy story with very engaging and real characters that are thrown quickly into unreal situations that they have to learn to deal with.
I really enjoyed this story, the characters, how it progressed and concluded, I literally couldn't put it down since beginning it.
I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader copy and I have not been compensated in any way.
There are parts of this story I enjoyed alot, but there were times I struggled to even finish this book. The story took so many side turns, I felt like I do when my teenager tells me a story, struggling to remember the main parts and wondering how we took this side road. Part Hunger Games and part sweet love story, I found parts of the story slower than sap running down a tree. Everytime I had decided to put down the book for good, a good action sequence would show up to drag me back in. This book was just okay for me, not great but definitely not the worst I have read. My review is based upon a review copy.
This is the first book by this author that I have read and I loved it! It won't be the last! I love the incorporation of the Faye and witches and other supernatural beings. It made me laugh out loud, cry, feel good and feel bad. It was a great love story! Every book in this collection is great in each and every way by the different authors who came together to create this dystopian world!
