Here I thought that last line meant we'd be starting with a project that a 3 year old would be able to undertake, but I'm pretty sure that's just a choking hazard warning... This is NOT an instructional book. Projects are NOT sorted by difficulty, target age, skill-set, etc. This would have been much better entitled, "Sewing Together with Your Kid", where the competent adult is given ideas and templates, and also has the experience to know which projects will be easiest. There's no difficulty/complexity rating on these, and even many adult sewing books have those helpful guides... major oversight.

We might try the felt finger-puppets, but already we're going off-script - we don't want to do boring farm animals. So I might use the basic finger-puppet template.. maybe.. I guess. Pretty disappointing, and glad I can shove this back through the library return hole. :p I want to give it 1 star, but it isn't totally crap, I suppose. It's also not got a patch on The Australian Women's Weekly Art & Crafts for Kids in re: creativity or inspirational content...

Wanted to comment on Tracey's review, but she's blocked all comments on her posts - wanted to thank her for instead recommending Sewing School ®: 21 Sewing Projects Kids Will Love to Make an an introductory, instructional sewing book. I'll be looking into that. :) Thanks, Tracey.

A good selection of projects to sew by hand for younger crafters learning to sew. Some could be more easily done by machine, but for those still learning, this is a good selection to start with. Some pretty classic patterns too, that kids would still want to make. There didn't seem to be as much instruction on some skills, so maybe this might suit a not-totally-new beginner more - it is a collection of patterns, after all, and not a learning primer.

children's nonfiction; crafting/sewing. I'd recommend this for older children who already love to sew and are looking for a good variety of grown-up looking projects. Instruction of sewing basics is minimal--for a much better primer, try Andria Lisle's Sewing School.

Emma Hardy is one of my favorite sewing book authors. I have read many of her titles, and she doesn't disappoint with this one!

This book is designed for children to learn how to sew by hand, just like so many of us did when we were eight or nine years old. Once these skills and techniques become like second nature, a child can begin to learn how to sew using a sewing machine (with adult supervision) when they are a little older.

The projects in the book are sorted into the appropriate chapter, i.e., Animals & Other Creatures, Pretty Playthings, Fashion Fun, etc. My favorite chapter was Pretty Playthings because it included ragdolls, doll clothes, doll bedding, a miniature toadstool & mice playset, a fabric tea set and felt cupcakes; and I have always loved dolls and miniature playsets.

The stepped-out photos with written instructions for the projects are excellent. Author Hardy's designs are colorful, cute and appealing. She gives a great introduction before sharing the projects. A 'Techniques' chapter and templates for the projects are included in the final pages of the book.

Projects especially suited for adults to make for their children or grandchildren include, in my opinion, the dolls with their clothes and bedding, owl stuffed animal, finger puppets (barnyard critters in this case), fabric tea set with cupcakes, sewing basket, and the pirate and fairy and tiara with wand costumes from the 'Dressing Up Time' chapter.

Highly recommended for parents and grandparents, 4-H and scout leaders, temple/church school youth leaders, childcare workers, classroom teachers, and those teens and adults interested in making a lovely handmade gift for the special children in her/his life.

This is a wonderful book full of wonderful projects! My daughter and I have had SUCH a delightful time with the projects in it ... starting when she was four and still continuing. Best yet, it's given her a confidence in sewing such that she decided to make a flower for her Nana this Christmas and drew the pattern herself, cut it out and we sewed it together ... she sewed on sunflower seeds, etc and it turned out delightful... I never would have had the confidence as a non-sewer without having first done the projects in this book! And I love seeing the confidence she's gained! Fantastically done!

This book actually does have projects that I think kids would want to sew and could. The instructions are for hand sewing but a lot of it is easier done on the sewing machine, if your kid can handle that. Love her very easy method for making drawstring bags. My daughter has been making these, using the machine, and is very proud!

I bought this book to teach my girls to sew. My 7-year old has started the lessons from it (with me as a teacher), and she absolutely loves it. She even made a pattern for one of the projects all by herself! It is a very fun book with many different projects for different skill levels. My 5-year old just started on it too and is super excited! Love this book!
