This is written for older kids, probably 10+ — kids that have some experience with or knowledge of paddling/boating. Readable and interesting, but it is not IMHO a great collection of whitewater stories, especially for kids.

Sometimes it's a bit hard to judge a book's type when picking it up on audio, which was most of my problem with this one--I just didn't realize what I was getting. I expected it to be more story than explanation, but it ended up being about equally split. (Also, sidebars with extra definitions, tidbits, etc. don't translate extremely well to audio.) I did enjoy some of the dangerous episodes, especially in the later stories. Also, I appreciated that the environmental-preservation perspective was not as pushy as in some books and seemed to present a fair picture of the human needs on both ends of the issues.

Different groups of explorers tackle rivers on three continents in this chapter book for kids.
The first exploration takes on a portion of a river in Alaska that had never been un-frozen. The river team uses kayaks to travel down the fast running Chitinah River for 130 miles. They encounter rapids, 10 foot waves and deadly pour-overs.
