Los Angeles TV reporter Jaycee Wilder fled her woodsy New Hampshire hometown long ago, but when she gets word her teenage cousin has gone missing from the elite boarding school she attends on scholarship, Jaycee answers the urgent plea for help. Despite having narrowly survived the clutches of a serial killer herself, the intrepid storyteller and amateur investigator rushes back to the family she barely remembers and the wintry campus of an illustrious academy known for grooming the next generation of society's most privileged members. But just below the pristine surface of school uniforms, and wistful first crushes, Jaycee learns of a lurid opportunity that exists for a daring few.
As Jaycee penetrates the layers of her cousin's pubescent inner circle, she uncovers a world where innocence is lewdly corrupted, and secrets are too lucrative to expose. Sifting through rumors, and myths, Jaycee builds a fondness for the spirited young cousin she never took the time to know, but is growing desperate to find. Relying on her own skills, and those of her trusted police source, James Barton, she follows a trail that takes her to a secluded estate in the state's northernmost territory. Racing to expose the tawdry pay-for-play enterprise that may have entangled her own relative, Jaycee peels back layers that run deep and discovers that sometimes surviving isn't enough and justice can be the ultimate final transaction

"Hadn’t the nightclub murders taught her anything about the perils of dancing too close to a bonfire?" Of course they didn't. This is Jaycee we're talking about. Nice quick read, finished in one sitting. It would be possible to enjoy as a standalone, but definitely start with Throw Away Girls for the full experience. They both flow nicely and keep your attention, our lovely Jaycee often throwing herself into perilous scenarios without a second thought. Some other characters from the first do feature, but the focus here is on Jaycee returning home alone to look for a missing family member, her cousin Eve.
As other reviewers have mentioned, I could see this on the small screen. Perhaps on Netflix. I don't always like Jaycee, but she's a larger than life character: determined, successful, incredibly intelligent, and of course stunning because we have to throw that in there as well. I did think a little too much went into describing her looks sometimes, and it's mentioned quite often. I still find her to be a bit off-putting, but she's fun to read about. My personal rating is a 3.5, rounded up to a 4.
Still recovering from the traumatic events of the first book, Jaycee should be resting... but vacation is over. It's not back to work as a reporter, it's back home... home to New Hampshire to see people she hasn't seen in years. She's left sunny LA behind because she was moved to come help. Her aunt has informed her that her cousin is missing. Hard-working and accomplished even at 16, she's not the kind of girl that would just vanish of her own volition. The elite boarding school she attends insists that everything is fine... they have a strange policy where they allow students to take a few days off and get their head straight with no notice whatsoever. Interesting school.
No one involved with the school or police is concerned, but it doesn't take Jaycee long to find people willing to talk. Some have had their suspicions for a long time about something between young girls and rich older men... and it's not just Eve they're talking about.
I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Waldorf Publishing, thank you! My opinion is honest and unbiased.
this book was fun and a quick read. something a little different for me. i received a copy from netgalley and the publisher. i could see this book as a tv show.
This was a good, quick read. I typically prefer mysteries written with a little more depth, but I think younger girls in particular would enjoy this series - the dialogue and action seemed very appropriate for young adults. Jaycee Wilder is a strong, young character, and the secondary characters were all very interesting and well defined. The story was very well plotted and paced. This has the potential to be a really good series - and would be much better on TV than some of the current shows. This is probably more a 3.5-3.75 for me, but it's still a very good story. Many thanks to NetGalley and Waldorf publishing for the arc!
Wow! What a powerful novel between cousins Jaycee and Eve! I was inspired bye the strength of these two woman in this book! It was refreshing to read a book that names stores and places I am familiar with because I am from that area, this never happens in a book for me. Jennifer Vaughn has written a best seller with this book I have no doubt! It is incredibility powerful and emotion, the characters where so well developed I felt I was right in the novel with Jaycee and Eve, going through everything they did! I highly recommend this book, it is an important subject matter that needs to be talked about, I imagine these things still go on today!
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I wanted to read this one. I liked the premise, especially being from New Hampshire. However Parts of it were far fetched, and there was a continual reminder of the earlier book, which I found to be quite tedious. A girl in a private school goes missing after being introduced to a secret group of girls who essentially sell themselves. Jaycee is her aunt and comes to NH to investigate. I really didn't like the ending.
Jaycee rushes to the rescue of her cousin Eve when she suddenly goes missing from her college campus. No one knows where she is and Jaycee digs right in to become a undercover college girl to snoop around for any clues.
I found Eve's character could have been built up more...as at the end she really showed her true grit and kicked some ass on her own terms. A young adult read.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The quality of this narration is absolutely horrible. The narrator's constant lilt and the muffled quality of the recording reminds me of a 1980's book on tapes ....but worse because it's 2023.
It's a shame since I just finished/enjoyed the first book in the series and had high hopes for book two.
I was anxious to start reading this series and this second book does not disappoint! Jaycee's character leaves you wanting more. This book was hard to put down with many twists and turns. Fabulous summer reading!
