Miriam A. Averna writes horror, dark, thrillers, twisted or just plain weird stories. She lives in Northamptonshire but is originally from the South of England and was born in sunny Sicily. She likes to take the mundane and make it into something more sinister than you thought possible. Convinced that there is always 'more to it' than meets the eye, her debut novel No Cure for Fear is an inevitable result of this notion.
She began writing when she was a kid and is an avid reader of fiction, in particular thrillers, horrors and dystopian. Her stories have featured in Devolution Z mag, Kishboo e-magazine Autumn 2015 (runner-up), England's Future History and on http://www.pennyshorts.com. She also runs a horror blog (Horror Scribes) that offers debut flash fiction writers a chance to get published (as well as win cash).
When not writing she loves watching films (especially horror), likes to keep fit, and spends more time than necessary thinking about food and cataloguing ales and craft beers in her head.

I really enjoyed this novel by Miriam Averna! I was loving it from page one and eager to keep reading right to the end. I love a book that holds my interest like that and let's me escape the humdrum of everyday life.

The plot is really interesting! Eddy Miller is a small time drug dealer on a council housing estate in the UK. He's worried about his 16 year old sister who is battling a form of leukaemia. He would do anything to help her. Anything.

When approached by an old school friend with a "way too good to be true" offer he should have ran a mile. The plot quickly unravels into a biomedical thriller with plenty of great characters to enjoy along the way.
I could see this book as a TV mini-series or movie easily.

Eddy's gang of friends help him in his distribution business and despite being a bit of a wayward bunch are all good mates. I found the characters easy to connect with and didn't lose track of a moment of the story. There are ups and downs through the whole book and a few shocking moments.

With sinister overtones events start to turn for the worse and I really liked the idea behind the book. It got me thinking "what if" and "probably!". A bit worrying really. It's not really far-fetched fiction in many ways.

The pace is solid and it didn't lose momentum. As reveals are shared we get propelled towards a top notch ending that was exciting and kept those pages turning.

I am giving this book 5 stars - pure enjoyment, easy to read, easy to like with a good plot and realistically good characters. I really like Miriam's writing style, she knows how to talk to the reader and am eager for more books from her. Don't overlook this one. It was great timing reading this book after a few reads that had not interested me and left me wondering if I'd find an interesting book soon. I did!

Well done Miriam Averna - hugely enjoyable!

I won a paperback of this book in Miriam's book launch event. All review opinions are my own and my review is totally unbiased.

If you like stories that follow a group of ne'er do wells as they skate and ooze through life not dealing with the issues that plague normal hard working folks then you will like this book. Until about the second chapter when you realize that these seemingly unaffected drug dealers have as much on their plates as the next guy.

As this is my first book of Miriam Averna. I did not know what to expect. Now I know I want to read more with her rich characters and believable plot. It is obvious to me that edge is going to be a natural in the thriller genre.
My full review will be posted on The Page Turner during Mystery Thriller Week The week that brings together authors, bloggers, and fans annually.

My Review:
NO CURE FOR FEAR is one of the books that I literally couldn’t put down. Miriam Averna has this sort of writing that is so compelling that it grips you till the very end.
The plot is full of suspense and tension that keeps you second guessing along the way. What I also enjoyed was that there was just a tad drop of humour within the plot that releases the tension of the actual piece.
The story is voiced from multiple POVs as well as flashbacks of the past leading to the present that gives the reader a rounded view of the plot.
Overall, it was an amazing read! So if you enjoy medical mysteries, this read is for you or literally anyone that enjoys a well-written storyline.

Suspenseful, almost lovable characters, and an excellent and original story line.

A group of young and ambitious cocaine dealers agree to be guinea pigs in a supposed clinical drug trial. Their need and greed for a good time, and for money, has gotten the better of them. Soon they discover that the trial is not on the up and up, and they attempt to find out why. The story was a page turner for me. Goodread.

It has been a long time since I've read a medical thriller and though I'm not familiar with the author I really enjoyed this book. I did not like the characters but the story line gripped me from the start. I think the only character that I really liked was Eddie's sister Suzy. Great writing style that kept me glued to the pages until the early morning hours. I love the book cover!!!!

Thank you to TBConFB for the copy.

Corporations that control people for their own ends is eerily topical. As a story I liked it, plenty of pace and not too technical when dealing with pharmaceutical development. The deception and intrigue drew me in. Well done to the author.

We are introduced to the Ralph in the introductory chapter of the book. He is working in his laboratory on a cure for leukaemia when he is called into the office of his boss. She tells Ralph that she will help facilitate promotions for him within the company if he will assist her in finding trial subjects for a new medication for severe depression. Ralph approaches an old college acquaintance, Eddie Miller, to see if he would be interested in participating in the medical trial. Eddie, who dropped out of college and is now a local graffitti artist and cocaine dealer, is desperate for money to help his terminally ill sister. Despite his misgivings about the proposal he agrees to undertake the medical trial in exchange for an opportunity to keen the profits from a synthetic type of cocaine. Eddie also persuades three of his fellow drug dealing friends to participate. The four men start taking the trial medication and soon things start to go wrong and they start experiencing serious side effects.

Ralph is an egotistical loner who feels disappointed with life due to the fact he was not accepted to study at medical school. His brother, who is five years his senior, stole his motivational notes as to why he wanted to become a doctor and used them to gain entry himself into medical school. When Ralph uses these same notes, years later, in his application to medical school he is accused of plagiarism and rejected. Ralph never recovers from this and feels compelled to prove himself to his family, who see him as the inferior achiever.

Eddie is the leader of his group of drug dealers and the instigator of their participation in the medical trial. He is not a big user of cocaine himself and is very devoted to his sister, who is dying of cancer. Eddie is forced to drop out of college when his father walks out on the family and he needs to earn an income. When Eddie starts to realise that things are not going well, Ralph convinces him to remain on the medical trial and keep his friends involved to, by providing him with medications for the treatment of leukaemia for his ailing sister.

The characters of both Ralph and Eddie were convincing and well described. The story is fast paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I read this book in three days which is pretty fast for someone who works full time. I rate this book four out of five stars as I really like it.

‘No Cure for Fear’ by Miriam A Averna is a thriller set in the seedy underworld of drug pushers and users. MEDiChem, a mysterious biomedical corporation, is conducting a secret experiment among drug dealers, asking them to trial a new mood and behaviour control drug in exchange for free synthetic cocaine which can be sold to their customers for 100% profit. The offer looks too good to be true . . . and it is.

The drug dealers – Eddy, Gecko, Jake and Blair – are portrayed sympathetically, particularly Eddy, a talented graffiti artist who is trying to raise money to help his little sister receive private medical care to fight her Leukaemia. When he begins to suspect the drug trial he is on is not what it seems, MEDiChem promises to put Susy on a trial for a miracle leukaemia drug if he continues to take Paranoxium.

But the side effects of Paranoxium are unexpected and devastating. Wanting answers, Eddy and his friends break into the MEDiChem building and discover who’s really behind the experiment, what’s at stake and the lengths MEDiChem ‘s director - the beautiful Dr Ripley - is willing to go to get her way.

Although there are some editorial issues that need to be addressed, particularly relating to consistencies in paragraph indentation and punctuation, this is a gripping read. The story line is a little unusual, taken from the perspective of drug dealers rather than a group of more heroic characters. Although the ending raises to a crescendo and many loose ends are tied up, I still would have liked to have known more about the shady characters behind the drug trials and their ultimate intentions. The fast pace covers a few plot holes. The writing style is succinct and to the point. This is a self-published book that is not far off looking like a traditionally published book, and many of my issues would have been solved by a good editor. Well done for an enjoyable read, quirky characters and a distinctive plot.

No Cure for Fear is about how the worlds of drug dealers and a Biomedical Scientist's lives get entwined.

Ralph, the Biomedical Scientist is willing to do anything to further his career. However, what he doesn't realise is so is his boss Dr Ripley. Ralph is told by his boss to recruit an old friend to test out experimental drugs by any means possible, however it must all be kept confidential. Eddy, the drug dealer is then recruited by Ralph and given an offer he can't refuse.

A page turning thriller with all kinds of characters. Some likeable and others not so much. An interesting read with a gripping storyline.

I'm afraid this wasn't my cup of tea at all. The plot seemed juvenile and lacked sophistication. The grammar wasn't great with some badly constructed sentences. Sorry, not for me.

This one was a bit of a mixed bag for me. To start with I found the jumping around of timelines confusing. It took me a while to warm to any of the characters although eventually I did find I was really hoping things would turn out well for Eddy- although I doubted it would!

After a bit of a slow start the story got moving and I enjoyed the second part a lot more. Not really my cup of coffee but worth a read. Thanks to TBC and the author for giving me the chance to read & review this book.

I really enjoyed this book, it had an interesting storyline that gripped me all the way through. I read it it under a day, which shows just how much I enjoyed it.

I have to admit I didn't really warm to any of the characters, although Eddy was the one that captivated me the most with his desperate attempts to save his sister at any cost.

Overall, a great read and 4 stars from me, I look forward to the next book.

No Cure for Fear: A fast-paced, gritty thriller
By: Miriam A. Averna
5 out of 5 stars

The story No Cure for Fear: A fast-paced, gritty thriller by Miriam A. Averna is a thrilling medical book. This is a story that will have you quickly turning pages wanting to know what happens next. It all starts with a deal being struck between two people who have reconnected with each other. Eddy Miller is a cocaine dealer and graffiti artist. He runs into his friend Ralph who offers him a chance to make money with a new type of cocaine. One catch, he and his crew must take part in a medical trial. Needing the money as his sister has a terminal illness Eddy agrees and soon after is when it all starts to go wrong. What is the truth behind the drug trial and is there more going on than meets the eye?

This book has more ups and downs than a rollercoaster. It grabs you from the very beginning and doesn’t let go. I had to tell myself to breath several times as some scenes are intense. I really could empathize with Eddy. He loves his sister and everything he does is for her. When the opportunity come up that he can get enough money to pay for her treatments he jumps at the chance. At first, he doesn’t seem to understand the danger that everyone is in however that soon changes. It makes you think of what you would do in Eddy’s place. This is the first book I have read by the author and will not be the last. If you love thrilling stories this is one you want to put on your TBR list. Because of the drug use and other subjects that arise in this story, it would be recommended for a mature audience.
