The Worldsea Era #2

The Burning Princess

Rate this book
Passions flare and adventure erupts.

The explosive Princess of Flame, Pele, is on a mission. Her half-demon father has terrorized the Big Island long enough, burning and killing people for no crime worse than living. Even if Pele didn’t have an obligation to protect her people, she knows she has to stop her father’s reign of terror.

But Pele has more problems than just her father. A dark spirit haunts the site of her father’s last attack, a ghost even the kahuna cannot seem to banish. And now visitors arrive on the Big Island--unwelcome foreigners and the volatile Sea Princess herself. Pele cannot allow them to wreak the same devastation on her island they did on Namaka’s.

Each of these dangers demands attention. If the ghost is left alone it will become a Nightmarcher, a nightmare more dangerous to the people than even her father. The half-demon may hold a key to dispelling it, but his power far outweighs Pele’s. And the mermaid Princess wants something from the Big Island, something with the power to change the course of life on Sawaiki. Whatever that may be, it might be Pele’s best chance to save her island.

Along with his wife and daughter, Matt lives as a digital nomad, traveling the world while researching for his novels. He reads approximately a bazillion books a year, loves video games, and relaxes by binge watching Netflix with his wife.

Matt writes retellings of mythology as dark, gritty fantasy. His passions of myths, philosophy, and history inform his series. He strives to combine gut-wrenching action with thought-provoking ideas and culturally resonant stories.

As a child, Matt read The Lord of the Rings with his parents. This sparked a lifelong obsession with fantasy and started him on a path of discovering the roots of fantasy through mythology. In exploration of these ideas, the Eschaton Cycle was born—a universe of dark fantasy where all myths and legends play out.

This book kept me guessing, and turning the page until the end. The two princesses fight to save the people they love from the darkness that is their father. I love the way the author has this book where to me could be a complete standalone or with the first one. I great read for teenagers and adults alike. I completely Recommend everyone to read at least once!

Although it can be read as a stand-alone, I highly recommend reading The Seventh Princess first in order to better understand what is happening.

This book is well written with excellent character interaction and an exciting plot. There are some minor spelling and grammatical errors that can be easily overlooked while engrossed in this story.

I give this book a 4 star rating. The Burning Princess is the second book in Matt Larkin's The Worldsea Era series. While this book can be read as a stand alone, I highly recommend that you read the first book prior to this one so you fully understand the storyline as it continues from where The Seventh Princess (Book 1) ended.

When Pele, who lives on the Big Island, was 6 years old she was named Princess of the Flame. She is the daughter of a human mother and a half-demon father. Her father abandoned them and continues to roam the island terrorizing the inhabitants. With her father's latest attack, he has unleashed a ghost that Pele must stop or it will become even worse than her father.

One of the "rules" the Princesses are supposed to follow is to remain on their island. Namaka the Princess of the Sea (Book 1 of series) has come on a quest of her own. She is determined to find something on Pele's island to save her mother and other of her islanders who are ill. Can they learn to work together to defeat the evil on Pele's island and find what Namaka came looking for and that Pele also needs now?

Matt Larkin has created a Polynesian type world rich with humans, mermaids, sea dragons, and many other creatures. He is off to a good start with the first two books and I look forward to reading future books in this series.

This story begins where The Seventh Princess ends, though with Pele the Princess of the Flame on the Big Isle. And like Namaka, Pele hasn't yet learned how to control her feelings. This causes a lot of unintentional burning from Pele. When Pele finds her Mother after years without her, she also finds she has a brother. When so many of Pele's people become ill, Pele sets out to find a cure.
At the same time, Namaka has come to the Big Isle in search of a cure for her Mother and her people too.
This sets up a clash between the two Princesses, with both searching for the same thing. Along the way each will meet new friends that may help or hinder.

The journey continues as we're introduced to Pele, the Princess of Flame, her island and her people.
When Namaka, Princess of the Sea, comes to Pele s island looking for the Waters of Life to save her mother and people from a sickness that was brought unknowingly from the once strangers; their meeting doesn't fair very well!
Ultimately they must work together as Pele s brother and villagers fall to the same sickness.
Along the way we meet a Nightmarcher, a demi-demon, bird people and stone spirits.
A real page-turner...engaging, adventurous, thrilling...I can't wait to see where this journey takes us next and who else we may meet along the way!!
