Embracing Hope by Janell Butler Wojtowicz is a contemporary Christian novel which I really enjoyed. Embracing Hope is a study of life and of grief. There is no one way to work through grief. There is no time limit on the pain. And there are multiple ways to deal with loss. Ultimately one has to work through the pain and the loss to find a new way of 'normal.'
God is at the centre of the novel. "Follow His road map." When life and loss hit, people either run to God or from God. The God of all comfort is also the God big enough to take our anger and our questions. "Lean on God. He'll get you through this." Grief lasts as long as it lasts but we need to "give it all to God, only He can set you free."
There are the difficult topics of anger, alcoholism, violence, suicide and domestic abuse. This doesn't make for easy reading but it is 'real' life. Even the Christian can have moments of deep despair where God feels absent.
Linking to this is the theme of forgiveness, "Don't waste anger on someone God has already forgiven." This may seem a step too far but God requires that we forgive because we have been forgiven.
Life can be hard but doing life without God is harder. "He doubts God can do anything, so he tries to do it all." Life needs to be done in partnership with God. Give Him our burdens and watch Him transform lives into blessings.
Embracing Hope was a powerful, gritty read with complex characters. Embracing Hope showed the power of the love of Christ to bring hope. "Hope is a decision, it's action."
Embracing Hope is a story that needs to be read, life is not always fun but God is faithful.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

Embracing Hope is a sweet romance which looks at loss, grief, faith, and of course hope. The “Christian college bubble” is spot on, as is the reality that life – hard life – happens in spite of the bubble. Along with the different stages of grief, this novel addresses tough topics such as alcoholism, abuse, assault, and suicidal thoughts as well as a plethora of ‘smaller’ stuff like burnout (from trying to do everything because you no longer believe God will), body image/insecurity and finding (and doing) what you were created to do.

Drew and Allison are likable characters whose initial attraction progresses naturally into a deeper relationship. I appreciated that they each had their own moment to be the strong one. Both used their respective strengths – or what they had recently learned for themselves – to offer hope and advice to each other when most needed. A great picture of how community should be lived out in relationship.

Bottom Line: Embracing Hope is one of those rare books that doesn’t shy away from an honest look at the reality of life for a Christian – the lows, the highs, and the ever-patient grace of God. The story told here is real and authentic, but at the same time it never loses its gentleness. Drew is angry at God, Chris is out of control, and Allison is caught in the middle. Yet, underlying all of it is the tender embrace of God. This is a debut novel, so some of the development isn’t perfect but overall it flows well and is a great weekend read! Looking forward to more from this author!

I was so glad to read that all Christians are not perfect, we don't live in a perfect world, and that anger and frustration can be a real part of our lives in the romantic Christian novel Embracing Hope by Janell Butler Wojtowicz.

The introduction of characters and their personalities in the first chapter sets up the tone of the story. The banter of dean Drew McKinley and the direct opinions of new student staff hire Allison play nicely off each other, but throw in handsome and self centered Chris, things really charge up.

Can life really be easy at a Christian College since after all you are surrounded by Bible studies, Chapel and the availability to Christian counseling? Thankfully author Wojtowicz revels the flaws that nags and sometimes eat us inside without our even knowing how to solve our problems even though we have the love God inside us.

Tragedies happen, faith is being tested and the weakness of the characters come alive as it so happens in real life. Many types of Christian issues are brought up and sorted out but can every problem be resolved? Wojtowicy uses this story to enhance the forgiveness of God, but the question remains ... can we accept forgiveness and forgive others?

A great read for those who are still looking to fill the emptiness in their lives as well as an amazing read for Christians who struggle with God's grace.

Wow. Wow. Wowee!
I was all set to give this book a 4-star review—relatable characters and sweet romance. I was reading along, enjoying the story when I hit about the 50-60% mark and bam!
The story of Drew and Allison went from a gentle romance to a deep exploration into the depths of man’s raw emotion.
“I’m so sick of people talking about hope.” Drew shook off Ben’s grip. “I tried to move on and it went nowhere. I have nothing to hope for and I never will again.”
Drew and Allison face depression, unforgiveness, grief and loss. You will go on a rollercoaster ride as you delve into the hidden reaches of the heart where man struggles to understand the way of an Almighty God.
“God, why don’t you help people who love and serve you? Why do You just watch them struggle?… You’re a God of compassion. Why didn’t You send someone to help? Or maybe You don’t exist. Have I wasted all these years thinking there’s a loving God when there’s not? If you exist, prove it.”
I cried, then I cried, and I cried again.
I highly recommend this book, but I must warn you. You will face the ugliest in man’s heart, as one of the characters cries out in anger, “I hate God.” Your heart will ache with Drew and Allison has they walk through the darkest night.
“Pearls are created by an irritant in the oyster’s shell, such as a grain of sand. It’s abnormal, it doesn’t belong there, but it can’t get out. To protect itself, the oyster covers the sand over and over again with a coating that creates a pearl.” She kissed Allison’s cheek. “Life can be one big painful irritant, Allie, but let God be that protective coating. The result will be a precious, beautiful pear—your future.”
Can they find hope for the future? Can they let go of their feelings of unforgiveness? Can they follow through with the unthinkable? Can they forgive their enemy?
Embracing Hope is about finding hope in God when life becomes too much to bear and death looks like a better option than life. It’s about finding hope even in the darkest of times.
“God never said our lives would be easy. There will be problems, and…and loss. But when you let God have control, He will use you and your circumstances for his glory.”

The number one thing that I liked about this book was that it was realistic. The Christian college campus scene we like to picture is one where everyone gets along, acts like perfect Christians, and just leads this happy go lucky life. And while we would like to think it could be that way for our children, the fact is that for some it is just not! So thank you to this author for keeping it real. We all make mistakes, have heartaches, and have family that do not act in a Christian like manner. But as the author repeatedly pointed out, it is how we react that matters.

I enjoyed Drew and Allison both as characters and as friends with a hopefully budding romance. They seemed to compliment each other so well. The author chose to take her time with their romantic interests in each other and I felt that was needed. I do not care for the stories that have a widower jumping head first into a relationship by chapter two. I just don't see that happening in the real world. In this story, Drew was allowed to process all the emotions that are normal for a widow just developing feelings for another. The were real, they were raw, and they were just what the story needed.

I think widowers and college students alike should read this book, as well as the romantic genre reader. It provides hope, a good lesson, and lots of encouragement. Although it took me awhile to read because of its length, it was well worth it in the end! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I liked how the author has put this story together. She shows us how time can heal a broken heart, bring people together when the time is right.
For some people, grief and healing have no certain time to be over.
Jobs can help but it can't replace the person that is lost.
Friends can help but it isn't the same as having the person that is lost back.
Drew is an amazing person who is struggling with his grief. I just wanted to reach through the book and wrap my arms around him and say "everything will be ok" but of course, I couldn't do that.
God can. God can do anything and everything!
Is there a second chance at love? Yes, I believe so when the time is right.
Allison is a pretty cool character and one of my favorites. I love her no nonsense attitude and how she approaches life. (I wish I was more like her)!
I loved this story. It has made think about certain places in my life and about where I should be in it. What would I do if certain things happened to me like Drew? How would I handle it? Not very well I'm afraid.
This book did keep my turning the pages. I just had to see what Drew would do and I wasn't disappointed either!!! Yay Drew!!!
The reason I gave this story 5 stars is I loved the story line. I think I will be reading more contemporary Christian.
Janell thank you for a wonderful story about real life and I will reread this story in the future!!!!

Embracing Hope

Drew and Allison's story is quite a story. I could tell the author put a lot of work into it. The book not only was about them, other interesting characters and all of them needed "Hope". Involves their family and other co-workers and students at the college. Drew is a college Dean and Allison is a student that is also working there. Definitely recommend the book. I was given an complementary copy of the book for my honest review but not required and this is my own opinion.

Let me start out by saying that I don’t normally become invested emotionally when I read a novel and I fully expected this to be the typical modern romance. But a few chapters in I realized that wasn’t so and I did become emotionally invested.

As the title says, this book is about hope. Hope in the face of tragedy. Hope in the face of horror. Hope that regardless of circumstances, you can find joy and love once again. Author Janell Butler Wojtowicz isn’t afraid to write about difficult and painful situations. But through it all is the thread of hope. She reminds us that God doesn’t leave us alone, scared, and hurting. He walks with us and heals our hearts.

With emotions often raw, the characters are authentic and honest. Dialogue flows well, and the author is well versed in college life. This book will not disappoint and I highly recommend it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a positive review.

Embracing Hope is an endearing tale of 2 people brought together by God to increase their hope and help them heal. In this story you will meet Drew and Allison who on the surface seem to be complete opposites yet as they find themselves drawn to one another. And I love how the author weaves the story such that Allison and Drew takes turns rescuing and healing each other. As that is how good relationships work. At one point, we may be down and need a friend to help us see our hope and at another point in our journey, they may need our support, love and encouragement. And that is exactly what you will find in this beautiful story of how God can bring two people together for his purposes. First we see Allison helping Drew find his hope again after his wife's death. And Drew has to help Allison find her hope and the path to forgiveness after a horrible encounter. So not only is this story a good read, it will encourage your faith walk with the Lord as in this book you meet characters facing real struggles in life, characters who are angry with God and resisting God's work in their lives. Yet through all of it, God is wooing them, bringing the necessary people in to their lives to help them take the next step of faith.

The one quote I loved from the book was "consider today the first mile of your journey. Many more miles lie ahead, some with curves, speed bumps, and detours, but I guarantee the destination will be worth it when you follow his road map. This quote in itself sums up the Christian life as Christians are not free from the valleys of life but they do have a friend that walks in the valleys with them and a friend that will make it all worthwhile. One verse used in this book is Psalm 16:11 which talks about God making known to us the path of life and filling us with joy in His presence. As I said, this book will be an uplift to your faith and your hope in the Lord. At one point, the statement is made that this life is a potholed road that will shake our faith and bring us to our knees. And that is a key theme the entire way through this book, that sometimes surrender is the first step to freedom.

Several things I liked about Allison's character was that she was an overcomer, before we meet her in this story she has overcome some difficult obstacles in life but she has not let that stop her from chasing her dreams. And she is not afraid to speak her mind, in fact, she basically tells off her boss on their first meeting. The thing I liked about Drew's character was the very real picture into dealing with grief, the grief of losing a loved one, a wife in Drew's case. This book accurately shows grief as a process, not something you just get over. Also, this book shows how each person grieves differently.

Highly recommend you get a copy of this book today, you will fall in love with Drew and Allison and your heart will ache with theirs. But most of all your faith and hope will be renewed.

Embracing Hope (2016) by Janell Butler Wojtowicz is an incredibly emotional stand-alone novel. This novel was released last November by Discern Products. This book comes in all forms including eBook, and is 314 pages in length. With a full-time job and a very energetic five-year old, this novel took me two days to read. I give this story 5 STARS. This is a Contemporary Christian Romance.

I highly recommend this novel, but I think it is important for future readers to know that this story contains some very heavy topics including violence, alcohol abuse, and temporary mental instability caused by severe trauma and grief.

This novel is fantastic! I found this story to be completely engaging and endearing, and I truly had a difficult time putting this book down. Late into the night I said to myself, “I can do one more chapter!” My emotions ran the gamut with this book, and I did find myself hurting deeply for the main characters, Drew and Allison. Both Drew and Allison are wonderfully and authentically written. And, I really loved the setting for this book. I have been a high school teacher for the past 13 years, so I totally relate to many of Drew’s frustrations with his students. All in all, I would have to say that this is definitely one of the best stories I have read this year. Wojtowicz is an incredibly gifted writer and I look forward to what she publishes in the future!

What I liked the best about this novel is that it doesn’t shy away from the truth about trauma and grief. It doesn’t try to sugarcoat anything. At the beginning of this novel, the reader is introduced to Drew, the dean of a Christian college. He is young, handsome, and intelligent, but he is carrying a grief that is slowly killing him. He has lost all hope and is very angry at God. Instead of dealing with his trauma and grief, Drew just throws himself into his work where he feels it is safe to hide from his now-empty life and too complicated feelings. At first this works, but then he has to go to a funeral — the first funeral since his wife’s death. This funeral is the start of his true feelings seeping out a tiny little bit. Drew has hit a snag in his “I’m just going to run away from all my feelings” plan, and he does slowly descend into a slight madness.

Allison is a 25-year old college student who works for Drew. Allison has experienced some tough times in her short life, but ultimately learned that leaning on God is really the only way to overcome and move on. Allison is the breath of fresh air that Drew needs to help him see that hope isn’t lost and that God isn’t a “bad” guy. Allison is strong, independent, and beautiful. She is a woman with a carefully plotted plan…until a traumatic wrench is thrown her way and her faith is tested. Allison, like Drew, is faced with a horrific moment, and becomes very angry and scared. She, too, has a “runaway from it all” moment, and does seem a bit petulant, but through counseling, prayer, and time, Allison is able to overcome.

On September 12, 2008, there was a Metrolink train crash in Chatsworth, CA. It made the news across the nation, and I remember watching on TV as the news reporters showed the horrific images of the trains that had collided and were on fire. I remember thinking how grateful I was that I didn’t know anyone who traveled by train, and I prayed that my dad, who is a firefighter for LA County Fire, would be safe because I knew he was called out to the scene. I went to bed that night sad for those who were going to get scary, sad calls throughout the night and the next day, but was so grateful I wouldn’t be one of those people. The next morning, a Saturday, I was awakened to my cell phone going off. It was a teacher from my school telling me to get dressed and head over to Chatsworth High School. One of my fellow coworkers, Angela, was there awaiting news about her son, Jacob, who had been on the train. I work in an Academy, and we teachers are a super tight-knit group. Jacob had been a student in several of our classes at one point during his four years at Palmdale High School. Jacob was never one of my students, but I worked with him on a few Academy projects, so I was blessed to get to know him a little. What I learned, as did all of his Academy teachers, is that Jacob was a truly remarkable young man. So getting the call to hang out and support his mom was a no brainer.

We waited for hours. Cops would come in to the room we were put in with random updates. Some families were escorted to various hospitals to be reunited with loved ones who had been found in the train wreckage. Some families were escorted into the room reserved for the cops to tell in private the bad news that their loved ones had been recovered, but were no longer living. It was an awful day full of ups and downs. But, we all waited surrounding Angela with whatever she needed: hugs, prayers, jokes, food, coffee, etc. Then, almost a full 24 hours after the crash, a fire captain and cop came into the room, sat in front of Angela, and gave her the news no mother should ever be given: they had found Jacob and he had not survived the crash. I can remember the moment like it was yesterday. Angela was directly across from me, and she was just staring at me sobbing as this man gave her news that would leave her totally shattered for the rest of her life.

Trauma is awful. I hate it. I hate that we live in a world that hurts people every day. I, too, have struggled with reconciling that God, our beautiful, perfect, omniscient God, allows so much trauma to occur. That day with Angela changed me. It took a long time for me to overcome the grief I felt over Jacob’s horrific passing. Most days, I acted like Drew and denied everything and focused solely on my work just to make it through a day. When we found out the train accident occurred because the Metrolink conductor was too busy being on his cell phone and blew past two yellow warning lights and one red light telling him to stop, an anger I had never experienced before erupted in my chest. The anger was unlike anything I had ever experienced in my life. When I saw Angela at school after she returned from her leave of absence, I was immediately angry at the man who had destroyed her life. There was nothing I could do. There was no place to put my anger. It started to brutally affect my life: I wasn’t sleeping anymore because of nightmares, I wasn’t eating anymore, and I was so short fused I yelled at everyone and everything. I truly felt a little like I was going crazy. The only thing that allowed me to overcome this anger was time, being surrounded by my loved ones and fellow teachers, and Bible study. If it wasn’t for God, I don’t know what I would have done.

Embracing Hope is an excellent novel. I really feel that Ms. Wojtowicz did a respectful and honorable job depicting a true-to-life, emotional story about loss, grief, anger, and forgiveness. I could relate every step of the way to Drew and Allison’s struggles. This novel was very cathartic for me, and I enjoyed every second with this book. I highly recommend this novel, and truly cannot wait for Ms. Wojtowicz’s next novel.

Drew dropped into the overstuffed sofa in a darkened corner of the lobby and pulled his suit jacket tighter around himself. The snow raged horizontally outside the picture window, obscuring the parking lot, and even the street lights. He swallowed the lump of sadness in his throat. His mind swirled like the snow. I endured another funeral. I plowed through swirled drifts and blinding snow. I kept my eyes on the road to out-run reality, but I can't. Kendra is gone, and she is not coming back. I've accepted that, so why does it still hurt? God, where is the hope everyone keeps talking about.? What is hope? I'm not even sure anymore. Show me hope or at least a little something to hang on to.

Embracing Hope is a captivating and realistic story of grief, loss, and hope, with a slow-budding romance threaded throughout. There are three main characters: Drew McKinley, 30, is dean at Riley Christian University, Allison Bennett, 25, is the newly-hired communications specialist and Chris Whitney, 25, is student senate president.

The story line parallels life on campus with its high cost of college tuition, out-of-touch faculty with students, substance abuse, and computer hacking with three individuals trying to cope with their own personal conflicts that threaten to destroy the very core beliefs in God. Drew is trying to overcome the deep grief he feels at the loss of his beloved wife, Kendra, Allison is grieving the loss of her dad, and Chris is trying to overcome a life of abuse.

Wojtowicz does a beautiful job showing how God intertwines these people in order to accomplish His purpose, not only in their lives, but in the lives of those around them. Allison helps Drew find hope after his wife's death, and Drew, in turn, helps Allison find hope and forgiveness after a brutal encounter. Chris is key in a most unexpected way in the scenario of anger towards God, healing deep hurts and finding hope.

One key theme throughout the book is that life is a potholed road that will shake our faith and bring us to our knees in total surrender. It is here we discover what is actually the first step to freedom from bondage. The other prevalent theme is the finding, and hanging onto, hope. Christ's message of forgiveness shines like a beacon to all of us who have ever harbored unforgiveness towards another. When tragedy strikes, faith is tested, and hope emerges. Embrace it.

I give Embracing Hope by Janell Wojtowicz a 5-star rating. I recommend it to those who have ever struggled with searching for hope amidst grieving and understanding God's grace in times of suffering.

Top notch writing brings depth and reality to this fictional tale, making it feel authentic and true to life. It touches upon many real-life and tough subjects not often found in Christian fiction nowadays, and I so appreciated that. It also gives a fascinating look at life on a Christian University campus.

I loved the way scripture was used in dealing with many of the challenges/hardships/obstacles the characters faced. There's so many great quotes and insights; I highlighted a ton of stuff and filled a couple of pages in my notebook! Here's a couple of my favorite quotes: “Just think what He can do through you when you trust God to lead the way.” and “Some things you have to let God deal with. Maybe He'll use you as part of the solution, but the solution is His to determine, not yours.”

Allison is a super relatable character. She's warm and kind, a bit serious, but with spunk and a great sense of humor. She deals with a lot, but keeps on persevering. Drew's struggling with grief after losing his wife. He's having a crisis of faith and is feeling as if there is no hope left. Everyone handles grief differently, certain things can trigger it when you think you've got it under control. It can creep up on a person at the most unexpected and inconvenient of times. There were a couple of characters in different stages of grief and this novel, I thought, gave a realistic look at what that looks and feels like.

This featured the best kind of slow-building romance, but it's so much more than just a typical romance. It's about life, the good, the bad, the messy. But in essence, just as the title suggests, it's about hope... embracing hope. And words are failing me at how to accurately describe how much I loved it. I wanted to read it as fast as I could, but at the same time, I wanted to take my time and savor it, make it last as long as possible... such a dilemma! When life interfered and I'd have to set it aside, I couldn't wait to get back to it. This book and these characters will stay with me for a very long time. At times it was painful to watch the characters struggling and hurting, but what it led to was a spiritual and emotional journey that I greatly enjoyed reading. Embracing Hope has found a place on my favorites shelf and is one of the best books I've read this year. I seriously can't recommend it highly enough!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my own honest opinion.

Not only is Janell Butler Wojtowicz a new author to me, but Embracing Hope is her debut novel. However, you would never guess this is a debut novel, as she writes like a seasoned author.

The two main characters are Drew McKinley, dean of a Christian college and Allison Bennett, a graduate student and new hire for the dean’s office. In addition, there are various other significant characters. The book is written in a realistic, true to life form and doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to some unusually heavy topics. Alcoholism, child abuse, assault and the loss of a spouse are among the horrific issues that leave us reeling.

Written in an authentic, no-holds-barred manner, Embracing Hope allows us, as readers, to experience the emotions and lives of the individuals in the story.  Wojtowicz portrays her characters’ actions and reactions to what life and God mete out in a realistic and genuine way. They question God, become angry at Him and angry at others and they wonder if life is worth living at all. Reading Embracing Hope, we, too, think and feel the thoughts and emotions that all but extinguish hope.

Hope is not extinguished for Drew, Allison, and others we meet and come to love. Biblical gems and lessons are interspersed throughout the book through the wise counsel of friends and pastors. We listen to their conversations and we hear God calling us to forgive and come to terms with our anger.

*****Disclaimer*****

I would caution that Embracing Hope contains some violent scenes some will find tough to read and process. I did. I had to skip through several pages that were too triggering for me. I have old memories of an assault and recent memories of an injury-laden fall, and this book is truly evocative of real life.

I received this book from Reads & Reels & R&R Book Tours. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

Sometimes picking up a book by an author I have not yet read is a game of chance. If I don’t like the story, I’ve wasted precious reading time (especially since I’m one of those people who finishes a book no matter how much I dislike it). On the flip side of that, I’ve found many authors I now love because I picked up one of their books and tried it for the first time.

Janell Butler Wojtowicz is one of those authors in the second category. I will most definitely pick up any future stories she writes.

The theme of finding, and hanging onto, hope is prevalent throughout her debut novel, Embracing Hope. The characters are real. Drew, Allison, and Chris get angry with each other as well as with God. They doubt themselves and make poor choices once in a while—some which are life-altering. Most of all, they are easy to relate to.

There is a lot going on in this one, but none if it felt forced. Every situation, every new challenge or obstacle flowed into the next smoothly.
And the message of forgiveness, of admitting to hurts, disappointments, and anger in order to grasp onto the hope we have in Christ shines through.

Embracing Hope surprised me with how much I grew to love the characters! These characters came to life. They stepped off the pages and waltzed right into my heart. I cheered for their successes and felt myself praying with them in their struggles. I didn’t expect to connect with this book, as much as I did.

I have to be honest, as I picked up this book, I really wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it. But before you throw stones, let me tell you why. I love reading, reading is my ticket to travel. I’ve traveled around the world and back in time through the pages of beloved books. I work full-time at a Christian university and I knew that reading this book wouldn’t be much of a trip. However, I can say with all honesty that in reality anytime we view the world through another’s eyes we are essentially taking a journey. I share this with you because if you, are on the fence trying to decide if you should read this book, please take my advise and read this book. I am so very glad that I took a chance and read this delightful book!

Janell has penned a beautiful story. Rich in detail, with realistic, believable characters that linger with you long after closing the pages. The story could have ended several different ways, and not knowing what would happen, kept me turning pages late into the night.

Embracing Hope is a poignant, heartfelt story that you won’t soon forget. I give this stirring, emotional story 5 stars.

Embracing Hope rings clearly as a message of the heart from author Janell Butler Wojtowicz. It's obvious that 1) Wojtowicz has significant experience in the world of Christian higher education and 2) has a heart for the message of healing and redemption that are woven throughout the novel.

The story is molded into two distinct parts: Drew's struggle and then Allison's struggle (I'm skirting away from spoilers here). While this might initially seem unnecessarily compartmentalized, I enjoyed the reminder that God often introduces us into someone's life so that we can help them and then eventually by helped BY them. He is so gracious in that way.

While the description of the novel might hint at it being a romance, I would not categorize it as one. Written moments between Allison and Drew are not long enough nor prevalent enough for the reader to revel in the developing relationship. Instead, be prepared to encounter pain and healing as the story's primary theme. It's a novel of souls encountering difficulties (some enormous) and learning to live despite them and, eventually, because of them.

If you're looking for a story that speaks of God's redemption after terrible circumstances, Wojtowicz's novel is a pleasant read and offers an important spiritual message that doesn't ignore the raw realities of this broken world.

The first half of the book gave a believable portrayal of Drew’s grief and his slow recovery from the death of his wife. The romantic tension with Allie built slowly, which felt realistic. The second half wasn’t as smooth—a lot of things happened, almost too many, and the characterisation wasn’t always consistent (characters either acted out of character, or changed too fast for me to believe it).

The proofreading and formatting was very good, but the writing could have been stronger. The writing style felt somewhat distant, which meant I always felt like I was watching the story unfold rather than participating in the action. I found it difficult to engage with the characters, perhaps because I never felt like I got into their minds enough.

Despite the writing issues, Embracing Hope was an encouraging story of overcoming grief and finding our hope in God. In fact, that was the greatest strength of Embracing Hope: the way it didn’t shy away from some of the big questions of faith, and the way it pointed to God as the solution.

A remarkable story of discovering hope in the midst of pain, grief, and despair. To forgive and let God renew the heart when every fiber of the human mind and body says "absolutely not."

Embracing Hope explores the aspects of loss with clarity in a gentle and enlightening manner. Janell Wojtowicz pens the tale with a firm hand and takes her readers down the road of heartache, not for pain's but for hope's sake.

The path experienced in the wake of loss is paved along multiple valleys. It's littered with potholes and takes the grieving into many a dark, impenetrable cavern. But does the tortuous journey actually end on a hopeful glistening mountaintop...at least someday?

If you don't know anything about grief, take this chance to learn. If you're hurting, discover why you should embrace hope even as you feel there is none.

Does God really work all things together for good for those that love Him? Or are some hurts in life beyond His redeeming hand?

Drew is a young widower wrestling with grief and God’s plan for his life. Allison is a devout and diligent grad student with many struggles of her own. The two share an undeniable attraction, but when they each hit one faith crisis after another, they will have to make a conscious decision to trust God and one another or else be consumed by the pain.

Relatable characters facing realistic issues combine with poignant lessons on faith, love, and forgiveness to weave Embracing Hope’s seamless, uplifting narrative. Profound truths are gently unfolded as the plot progresses, eventually leading to a beautiful, redemptive conclusion.

I highly recommend this book, particularly to anyone who has ever suffered loss or disappointment and struggled to find God’s plan as a result.

Powerful..thought provoking...Kleenex worthy! This book deals with many issues and shows that even Christians struggle in this world and can be depressed and lose hope from tragedies that strike. I love the human aspect of Drew and Allison and how even with strong faith they have moments of doubt. Chris comes from an abusive background and the consequences are heart rendering. I'm usually a Historical Fiction reader, but I'm so glad I read this, as it resonated in my spirit. I would say more but I don't want to spoil this by giving anything away. A definite must read and a keeper to read again.

This is a sweet romance by a "new-to-me" author that dealt with some tough issues. I really enjoyed the book and hope to see more by this author in the near future.

Write what you know. Isn’t that a cardinal rule for novelists? Well, writer Janell Butler Wojtowicz has done just that. Having spent a lot of years as a communications specialist at a Christian liberal arts college in the Midwest, for her first published work of fiction, Wojtowicz has chosen to write about, (what else?), the not-so-fictional life of a Christian university communications specialist at a fictional school in Omaha.

Wojtowicz has chosen well. The authenticity of her heroine Allison Bennett’s public relations role shines through every page in this tale of heartbreak and healing. Much of Allison’s fictional back story mirrors the author’s own real life story, adding even more realism to the plot.

In this first installment of what’s expected to be a three-part series, Bennett and her on campus boss, Drew McKinley tackle some of real life’s biggest, contemporary problems. In no particular order, Bennett and McKinley wrestle with the high cost of higher education, out-of-touch college faculty and staff, substance abuse, campus safety, sexual harassment in the work place, sexual assault on campus, computer hacking, cyber vandalism, child abuse, domestic violence, inner city poverty, body image, death and suicide.

Loss and how it changes lives is Wojtowicz’s overall story arch here. The author inserts a great deal of wise Biblical counseling in these pages. Wojtowicz’ characters’ dialogue with each other often reads like a spiritual enrichment and personal growth journal penned by Dr. James Dobson. And that’s a good thing.

Have you ever raised your hands toward the clouds, shook your fists and asked, “Why are you doing this? Do you hear me? Do you even care?” That’s a direct quote from Wojtowicz’s inaugural novel. It represents the angst that several of her main characters have in common. In the face of adversity, as Drew McKinley taught his class of collegians, “Your task is to follow (God’s) map because He might totally change your direction.” That principle perfectly summarizes this “uplifting love story.” Wojtowicz could’ve titled it “God’s Road Map.” If you’re dealing with life’s ups and downs, you need to embrace this book!

I thought the premise of this story sounded interesting - a Christian college dean, Drew McKinley, is still struggling with the loss of his young wife when he begins to fall for a grad student working in his office. How will he handle the guilt of loving this new young woman when he still isn't over his wife? Meanwhile, grad student Allison doesn't have time for romance, she's too busy working herself half to death to get through school, and yet there's something about the kindhearted administrator that touches her heart.

Drew is probably the most multifaceted character. His journey through grief was heartbreakingly believable and it was easy to empathize with him, to want him to find happiness. I also really appreciated his honest reaction to God in his mourning. He voices frustrations with the platitudes offered to those who grieve and that's something that isn't often dealt with in Christian fiction. It was good to see. Allison came across as tough and determined, but likable, although the way she talked to her new boss gave me pause. Chris, the student body president with a thing for Allison, wasn't as well developed as the other two, but I really appreciated how his character grew toward the end. The story itself flowed well and was engaging enough for me to read in a day.

I understand this is the author's debut and I look forward to more from her in the future.

“Embracing Hope” is an easily relatable book about doubts of God’s goodness when bad things happen. A young wife dies 6 months into marriage leaving the husband reeling trying to find a foothold; a father dies and leave a wife and daughter struggling to make ends meet and dealing with grief; alcoholism and physical abuse leave a student struggling between good and evil. The main characters must learn to trust, forgive and as per the title, embrace hope to endeavour to get to tomorrow. It is well written and definitely recommended.
