San Juan Gay: Hacia una historia LGBTQ+ de Puerto Rico - Spanish Version by Javier E. Laureano - 2024 Second Edition
Unfortunately, Goodreads does not have the new second edition in its catalog. I just finished reading this amazing chronicle of the LGBTQ+ history of Gay San Juan by Javier E. Laureano.
The author divides the chronicle into five stages:
The first stage starts in 1948 and includes the decade of 1950.
The second stage starts in the decade of the 1960s, when the LGBTQ+ movement fought for its rights, culminating in the Stonewall riots on June 27, 1969.
The third stage includes the 70s and ends in 1981. It deals with the opening of bars, saunas, and discotheques where LGBTQ+ people would assemble in a safe space and it's at the height of the gay liberation movement.
The fourth stage goes from 1981 to 1991 and it includes the struggles associated with HIV/AIDS and the height of the LGBTQ+ discrimination.
The final and fifth stage is from 1991 to the present. It starts with the first Puerto Rican Gay Pride Parade and the struggles for recognition and retaking our gay rights ending with same-sex marriage legalization.
The book is an easy read. I loved it, not only because I lived most of that history - I'm 68 - but also because I learned some of the things that happened after I left San Juan in 1985.
My only problem with the book is that it is extremely repetitive, with the author repeating the same incidents over and over.
