The Spooky Sponge

Rate this book
Annie Morton is eight years old. A bit shorter and chubbier than the average girl her age, there are two things in life that really bug getting out of bed, and getting a wash. She can’t stand it! The very thought of it makes her want to pull the blankets over her head every morning and stay in bed forever.

That is, until she meets The Spooky a snotty-coloured, raggy bit of sponge that has goggly eyes and a wrinkly mouth. But this is no ordinary sponge. This one lives. Both magical and spooky, it has powers that only Annie can control.

In this book, The Spooky Sponge meets Annie’s Mum. Payback time can be fun when you have a Spooky Sponge!

It 's all in the mind

Sam Cairns may no longer be a child but he knows just how a child thinks and is well attuned to the things a child thinks about and enjoys. We all know how averse children can be to the terrible chore of...getting washed. Annie is just such a child, that is, until her Mum buys her a new sponge. Annie is soon found to be terrified of the sponge when it appears to have a life of its own and chases her around the bathroom. Things soon change however and Annie and the sponge soon become allies and embark on a quest to 'cure' Annie's mum of the hideous crime of shouting at Annie, with hilarious consequences. A great story, full of wickedly childish humour, that children will love and the first in in what should be a hilarious and successful series for author Sam Cairns and The Spooky Sponge.

This is a wonderful story that is going to delight children and make adults smile. Eight year old Annie receives a present that at first she doesn't want because it scares here. Facing her fears, Annie finds something special about the spooky sponge and readers find a fun adventure. The author does a great job with the descriptions in this short tale and I loved the illustrations. The best part is learning that more tales are headed lucky readers way. This book is good for all ages and a must have for grade school kids Annie's age or older.
