James Peter Greaves is a former England international footballer who played as a forward. He is England's fourth highest international goalscorer (44 goals), Tottenham Hotspur's highest ever goalscorer (266 goals), the highest goalscorer in the history of English top-flight football (357 goals), and has also scored more hat-tricks (six) for England than anyone else. He finished as the First Division's top scorer in six seasons. He is a member of the English Football Hall of Fame.
In ‘The Heart of The Game’ Jimmy Greaves ties to turn his considerable experience in the game as a player, TV pundit and fan in to dissecting what has changed between the modern game and that of his past. Also, whether the changes have been for the good and the games likely future direction.
This wasn’t a bad book but it didn’t quite deliver on insight. There was lots of amusing anecdotes about former players managers and their antics etc but there was little that wasn’t obvious when looking at the differences between the past and present days.
This is a slightly disjointed book and I feel there is some repetition at points. Nevertheless it bears some interesting insight into football throughout the 20th century.
