Chris Tyroll Mystery #1
The Victory Snapshot
The past is never dead…
Sheila McKenna, an Australian social historian, flies to England to visit her grandfather after he sends her a rather intriguing letter.
Almost as she arrives, her grandfather dies. Murdered.
Chris Tyroll, maverick midlands solicitor, is drawn into the case and determined to find out who killed the old man.
Almost immediately, somebody drives directly at Chris and injures him.
Is Chris on the murderer’s hit list too?
As Chris and Sheila investigate, they begin to uncover a fifty-year-old story of comradeship, corruption and criminality.
Somehow, this story is connected to the death of Sheila’s grandfather.
But why does it still matter, to somebody at least, half a century later?
Chris and Sheila don’t know – but they do know that their lives are in danger.
Only those on the margins of society seem willing to help the pair in their search for truth and justice – and are eerily able to foresee the outcomes.
The authorities seem strangely disinterested. But why would that be?
The Victory Snapshot takes the reader on an intriguing journey of discovery, as Chris and Sheila dispense with convention and find their own, often ingenious, way to the truth.

An old man with something on his conscience murdered shortly before his Australian granddaughter, Sheila, arrives to see him one last time. When she stops by his solicitor’s office thinking she might know where her granddad might be, she meets Chris Tyroll, a solicitor who is always ready to defend the underdog. It’s up to Chris to tell her that her grandfather is dead.
Soon after it’s clear that there is much more going on than either Chris or Sheila suspect. Chris is nearly purposely run down one night returning home; soon after, his office is firebombed. When they both go to a retirement home to see the man Sheila’s grandfather had wanted to see, but was killed before he could, they find that man has died, and in fact, been smothered.
Before long, it’s clear that there are men wanting to kill both of them and they try to escape to Wales, only to be firebombed out of their hideaway.
What happens?
Barrie Roberts ramps up the suspense as it becomes clear that this whole nightmare has its roots years before in World War II and a successful plot to pull off a robbery that made at least one man – still alive – wealthy and powerful.
Turn off your phone, grab you snacks and drinks, and be ready to stay up the night or call in ‘sick’ to your work – you’ll not want to go anywhere till you come to the last page of this memorable thriller.

Interesting on legal twists and turns.
An enjoyable read. I think it was set in the 1990’s, but it seemed fairly contemporary apart from the main characters’ capacity for alcohol. Two bottles of wine and/or a large neat whiskey, and still coherent. Oh, and they smoked cigarettes, including roll-your-owns. The love interest was sweet, if lacking some depth. There was no foul language, nor sex scenes, although casual sex did occur, it was only alluded to. The plot was enjoyable and all the legal stuff was interesting. I liked it.
